10 Tips for Living in Turkey
Summary: If you've recently arrived in Turkey, here are 10 tips for digital nomads living in Turkey.
Welcome to the vibrant and diverse landscape of Turkey, a country that seamlessly blends ancient history with modern living. As a digital nomad, you'll find that Turkey offers a unique experience that can be both exhilarating and challenging. To help you navigate your new surroundings and make the most of your time here, we've compiled a list of 10 essential tips. Whether you're sipping Turkish tea by the Bosphorus or exploring the lunar landscapes of Cappadocia, these insights will help you settle in and thrive in your new environment.
1. Embrace the Turkish Language
While many Turks, especially in larger cities or tourist areas, speak English, learning the local language will enrich your experience. Start with basic phrases and greetings to show respect and willingness to engage with the culture. Apps like Duolingo or Babbel can be helpful, or consider taking a language course once you arrive. Not only will this make daily interactions smoother, but it will also open doors to deeper connections with locals and a better understanding of the culture.
2. Understand the Cost of Living
One of the perks of Turkey is its relatively low cost of living compared to many Western countries. However, prices can vary significantly between cities. For instance, Istanbul is considerably more expensive than smaller towns like Fethiye or Antalya. Budget wisely by researching the average costs of accommodation, food, transportation, and entertainment in your chosen locale. Local markets offer fresh produce at lower prices, and neighborhood eateries will give you a taste of authentic Turkish cuisine without breaking the bank.
3. Navigate the Visa Regulations
As a digital nomad, staying on top of visa requirements is crucial. Turkey offers various visa options, including the e-Visa for short stays and specific visas for longer-term residency. Keep in mind that visa regulations can change, so it's important to check the latest information from the Republic of Turkey's e-Visa website or consult with the Turkish consulate in your home country. Some digital nomads opt for the short-term residence permit, which can be renewed and allows for a more extended stay.
4. Secure Reliable Internet Access
Internet connectivity is vital for digital nomads. While Turkey has a good telecommunications infrastructure, with widespread Wi-Fi availability in cafes, restaurants, and public spaces, it's wise to have a backup. Consider purchasing a local SIM card with a data package or a portable Wi-Fi device to ensure you're always connected. Turkcell, Vodafone, and Türk Telekom are popular providers offering various plans to suit your needs.
5. Choose Your Accommodation Wisely
Your choice of accommodation can make or break your experience. Many digital nomads prefer renting apartments through platforms like Airbnb or Sahibinden. Look for places with dedicated workspaces and strong Wi-Fi. Some digital nomads and expats share flats to cut costs and socialize. If you're planning a longer stay, renting through a local real estate agent can provide more stability and often better rates. Always visit the property in person before committing to ensure it meets your expectations.
6. Explore the Local Cuisine
Turkish cuisine is a delightful exploration of flavors and traditions. From the famous kebabs and mezes to the less-known regional dishes, there's a vast culinary landscape to discover. Street food like simit (a sesame-encrusted bread ring) and gözleme (stuffed flatbread) are not only delicious but also affordable. Don't miss out on the traditional Turkish breakfast – a feast that can keep you fueled for the whole day. Cooking classes and food tours can also be a fun way to learn about the local cuisine.
7. Get to Know the Transportation System
Understanding the local transportation system will give you the freedom to explore. Turkey's transportation network includes buses, minibusses (dolmu?), metros, trams, and ferries. Istanbul's Istanbulkart, an all-in-one transport card, is convenient for accessing various modes of transport. In other cities, local transport cards or tokens are used. For intercity travel, consider the high-speed train or the well-connected bus system. Apps like Trafi and Moovit can help you plan your journeys.
8. Engage with the Expat and Local Communities
Building a network is essential for a fulfilling experience. Engage with both expat and local communities to create a support system and enrich your social life. Facebook groups, Meetup events, and local forums are great places to start. Attend cultural events, workshops, and language exchange meetups to immerse yourself in the community. Volunteering can also be a rewarding way to connect with locals and give back to your new home.
9. Respect the Cultural Norms and Traditions
Turkey is a land steeped in tradition and cultural nuances. It's important to be mindful of local customs and practices. For example, dress modestly when visiting mosques or religious sites, and be aware of the etiquette during the holy month of Ramadan. Understanding Turkish hospitality and the importance of good manners will go a long way in forming lasting relationships. Observing and participating in local festivals and holidays can also provide insight into the rich cultural tapestry of Turkey.
10. Stay Informed and Safe
Staying informed about local news and safety advisories is crucial for any expat. Register with your embassy upon arrival for updates on safety information. It's also wise to familiarize yourself with the nearest medical facilities and have a basic understanding of the healthcare system. Turkey is generally safe, but like anywhere, it's important to take standard precautions, such as avoiding unlit streets at night and keeping an eye on your belongings in crowded areas.
By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to a successful and enjoyable stay in Turkey. The country offers a rich tapestry of experiences for those willing to explore and immerse themselves in its culture. As a digital nomad, you have the unique opportunity to blend work and travel in one of the world's most captivating destinations. Ho? geldiniz – welcome to your new adventure!
Digital Nomads and Expats talk about Living in Turkey
"I would say, come to Antalya! It is a great city full of places to visit in the sorroundins. People are very warm and open. Life is easy in Antalya, the streets are safe, the weather is great and there are many activities to do. But not all is good, of course. You have to get used to the Turkish way of living. The "problem yok" (no problem) philosophy, where everything is ok, never seeing problems, is sometimes comforting and sometimes frustrating. Things are slower than in Europe or USA. You will need patience and adaptation to their culture and way of living. All in all, Antalya is a great place to live," said one member living in Antalya.
