Digital nomads who choose to settle here for a few months will find a city rich in experiences that don't have to break the bank. From serene temples to bustling markets, there's plenty to explore without spending a dime. Here are nine free things to do in Phnom Penh that will enrich your stay, including both popular and lesser-known attractions.

Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda

While the Royal Palace itself has an entrance fee, the surrounding gardens and the exterior views of the Silver Pagoda are free to enjoy. Digital nomads can take a leisurely stroll around the complex, admiring the traditional Khmer architecture and the beautifully maintained gardens. It's a great spot for photography or for simply soaking in the regal atmosphere of one of Phnom Penh's most iconic landmarks.

Location: Samdach Sothearos Blvd (3), Phnom Penh. The Royal Palace complex is situated near the riverfront, offering a picturesque setting.

Travel Tip: The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when the sun casts a golden hue on the buildings, making for stunning photographs.

Nearby: After your visit, head to the nearby Friends the Restaurant, a social enterprise known for its delicious international cuisine and for training disadvantaged youth.

Wat Phnom

Wat Phnom is a Buddhist temple that stands on a hill in the city center and is the tallest religious structure in Phnom Penh. It's free to wander the grounds and take in the peaceful atmosphere. The temple is also a popular spot for locals, who come to pray and relax in the shaded areas around the hill. It's a great place to experience the local culture and spirituality.

Location: Street 96, Norodom Blvd, Phnom Penh. Wat Phnom is easily recognizable by its central hill and is a focal point of the city.

Travel Tip: Visit during a local festival to see the temple and surrounding areas come alive with traditional music and ceremonies.

Nearby: Café Fresco is a short walk away and offers a great selection of coffees and pastries, perfect for a post-visit refreshment.

Phnom Penh Night Market

The Phnom Penh Night Market, or Phsar Reatrey, is a lively spot where you can experience the local nightlife without spending a penny. Browse through the various stalls selling clothes, souvenirs, and street food. Even if you're not buying, the market is an excellent place for people-watching and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere.

Location: Preah Sisowath Quay, Phnom Penh. The market is located on the riverside, making it a pleasant place to visit in the evening.

Travel Tip: While the market is free to enter, be sure to bring some cash if you want to try the delicious street food or grab a drink.

Nearby: Enjoy a riverside walk after your market visit, or stop by one of the many bars along the quay for a refreshing drink.

Olympic Stadium

The Olympic Stadium is a massive complex that was built in the 1960s and is a fine example of modern Khmer architecture. It's free to visit and is a popular place for locals to exercise, especially in the early morning or late afternoon. Join in on a game of soccer, try some aerobics, or simply enjoy a walk around the stadium.

Location: Charles de Gaulle Blvd (217), Phnom Penh. The stadium is a bit outside the city center but is easily accessible by tuk-tuk or motorbike.

Travel Tip: Visit in the early evening to catch the group dance exercises, which are a fun and energetic way to end your day.

Nearby: The City Mall is just a short walk away, offering a variety of dining options and a chance to cool off in the air conditioning.

Sisowath Quay Riverfront

The Sisowath Quay Riverfront is a picturesque promenade along the Tonle Sap River. It's the perfect place for a leisurely walk, jog, or bike ride, and you'll find plenty of locals and tourists alike enjoying the riverside vibe. The views of the river and the passing boats are calming and offer a respite from the city's hustle and bustle.

Location: Along the Tonle Sap River, Phnom Penh. The riverfront stretches for several kilometers, providing ample space for a long walk or run.

Travel Tip: Early morning is the best time to visit for cooler temperatures and to see the city wake up.

Nearby: The FCC (Foreign Correspondents' Club) is a historic bar and restaurant with a great view of the river, ideal for a sunset drink.

Street Art in Boeung Kak

Boeung Kak is an area that has become known for its vibrant street art scene. Wander through the streets and alleyways to discover murals and graffiti by both local and international artists. It's an open-air gallery that showcases the creativity and spirit of Phnom Penh's art community.

Location: Boeung Kak, Phnom Penh. This neighborhood can be found in the northern part of the city and is best explored on foot.

Travel Tip: Keep your camera ready as you turn each corner; you never know when you'll come across a stunning piece of art.

Nearby: Kettlebell Cafe is a health-focused eatery in the area where you can grab a nutritious meal or a smoothie after your art tour.

Independence Monument

The Independence Monument, or Vimean Ekareach, is an iconic symbol of Cambodia's freedom from French colonial rule. It's free to visit and offers a glimpse into the country's history. The monument is especially beautiful at night when it's lit up in the national colors.

Location: Intersection of Norodom Blvd and Sihanouk Blvd, Phnom Penh. The monument is centrally located and easily spotted from afar.

Travel Tip: Visit during a national holiday to see the monument become the focal point of celebrations and ceremonies.

Nearby: The nearby Botanico Wine & Beer Garden is a cozy spot to unwind with a drink in a garden setting.

Ta Prohm Temple

While not as famous as its namesake in Siem Reap, Phnom Penh's Ta Prohm Temple is a peaceful and less crowded alternative. This Buddhist temple offers a tranquil escape and a chance to see some beautiful carvings and architecture without the throngs of tourists.

Location: Monivong Blvd, Phnom Penh. Ta Prohm Temple is located in the southern part of the city, within the grounds of a high school.

Travel Tip: Since it's an active place of worship, remember to dress respectfully and avoid visiting during school hours.

Nearby: The Russian Market is a short tuk-tuk ride away and is a great place to explore local crafts and enjoy some street food.

Phnom Penh Community College

For digital nomads looking to learn something new or engage with the community, the Phnom Penh Community College offers free workshops and events on a variety of topics. It's a chance to meet locals and expats, learn about Cambodian culture, or pick up a new skill.
