Colombia has become an increasingly popular destination for digital nomads, thanks to its vibrant culture, affordable cost of living, and welcoming attitude towards remote workers. While Colombia does not have a visa specifically labeled as a "digital nomad visa," the country offers a type of visa that is well-suited for digital nomads: the Migrant (M) visa, particularly the M-5 category, which is designed for remote workers and independent contractors. Below are the steps to obtain this visa, which can serve the needs of a digital nomad looking to live and work in Colombia.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the M-5 visa, applicants must prove they are engaged in independent activities or services remotely for a company that is not based in Colombia. Digital nomads must provide evidence of their work arrangement and income, which should be at least three times the minimum wage in Colombia. Additionally, applicants should have a valid passport, health insurance coverage for their stay, and a clean criminal record.

Application Process

The application process for the M-5 visa involves several steps:

  1. Gather Required Documents: Prepare all necessary documentation, including a valid passport, proof of economic solvency, a letter explaining the purpose of your stay, and health insurance coverage.
  2. Online Application: Complete the visa application form online through the official website of the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. You will need to create an account, fill out the form, and upload the required documents.
  3. Visa Fee Payment: After submitting the application, you will need to pay the visa fee. The payment can be made online or at a Colombian consulate.
  4. Visa Approval: Once your application and payment are received, the visa will be processed. If additional information is required, you may be contacted by the visa office. Upon approval, you will receive an electronic visa (e-visa) via email.
  5. Arrival in Colombia: After obtaining the e-visa, you can travel to Colombia. Within 15 days of arrival or before the visa expires, whichever comes first, you must register with Migración Colombia to get a foreigner ID card (cédula de extranjería).

Official Departments and Agencies

For the most accurate and up-to-date information, digital nomads should refer to the official Colombian government websites. Here are the relevant links:

By following these steps and ensuring compliance with the requirements, digital nomads can embark on their Colombian adventure with the appropriate visa in hand. It's important to stay informed about any changes in immigration policies and to consult with the official Colombian authorities or a legal expert if needed.
