Panama has become an increasingly popular destination for digital nomads, thanks to its tropical climate, vibrant culture, and the introduction of a specific visa designed to cater to the needs of remote workers. The Panamanian government has recognized the value that digital nomads bring to the local economy and has thus created a visa to facilitate their stay. Here's how you can obtain a digital nomad visa for Panama.

Eligibility Criteria

Before applying for a digital nomad visa in Panama, it's important to ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria. Applicants must be able to prove that they are employed by a foreign company or are self-employed and provide services to clients outside of Panama. Additionally, you must demonstrate a monthly income of at least $3,000 USD or a yearly income of $36,000 USD. This income must be verifiable and consistent.

Required Documentation

To apply for the digital nomad visa, you will need to prepare a set of documents. These typically include:

  • A valid passport with at least 18 months remaining before expiration.
  • Proof of income, such as bank statements or a letter from your employer.
  • A criminal background check from your country of residence or from the last two countries where you have lived for the past two years.
  • Health insurance that covers you in Panama.
  • A completed application form.

It's important to note that all documents must be apostilled or authenticated by the Panamanian consulate and translated into Spanish if they are in another language.

Application Process

The application process for the digital nomad visa involves several steps. First, you must gather all the required documentation. Once you have your documents ready, you will need to submit them to the National Immigration Service of Panama. It's advisable to work with a local attorney who specializes in immigration law to ensure that your application is complete and to navigate the process smoothly.

After submitting your application, you will receive a temporary residency card that is valid for nine months. During this period, your application will be reviewed. If approved, you will be granted a digital nomad visa, which is valid for 18 months and can be renewed once for the same period.

Official Departments and Agencies

For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it's essential to refer to the official departments and agencies responsible for immigration and visas in Panama. Here are the relevant links:

National Immigration Service of Panama
Embassy of Panama in the United States
Consulate General of Panama in New York

By following these steps and ensuring you meet all the requirements, you can embark on your journey as a digital nomad in Panama with the proper legal documentation. Remember to stay updated on any changes to the visa process by regularly checking the official websites provided.
