Thinking about moving to Amman? Below we highlight some of the pros and cons of living in Amman.

With the rise of remote work, the allure of becoming a digital nomad has never been stronger. Amman, with its unique blend of ancient history and modern amenities, is increasingly catching the eye of those looking to combine work with wanderlust. But what is it really like to set up your digital shop amidst the rolling hills of this Middle Eastern capital? From the city's burgeoning café culture to its connectivity challenges, let's explore the pros and cons of living in Amman, Jordan as a digital nomad.

Pros of Living in Amman, Jordan as a Digital Nomad

One of the most enticing aspects of Amman for digital nomads is its relatively low cost of living. Compared to many Western cities, housing, food, and transportation can be quite affordable, allowing your hard-earned money to stretch further. The city is also a cultural melting pot, offering a rich tapestry of experiences from the Roman Theatre to the contemporary art scene. For those who love to weave work with cultural exploration, Amman is a treasure trove.

Amman's café culture is another significant draw. The city is dotted with a plethora of coffee shops, many of which offer reliable Wi-Fi and power outlets, along with an ambient atmosphere that's conducive to productivity. Places like Rumi Café and Books@Café have become hubs for the city's creative and expat communities, providing not just a place to work but also to network and socialize.

Moreover, Jordan is strategically located at the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and Europe, making it an ideal base for digital nomads looking to explore neighboring regions. With the Queen Alia International Airport offering numerous connections, weekend trips to places like the ancient city of Petra or the therapeutic waters of the Dead Sea are easily within reach.

Cons of Living in Amman, Jordan as a Digital Nomad

However, life in Amman is not without its challenges. The city's infrastructure can be a mixed bag for digital nomads. While there are areas with excellent internet service, connectivity can be inconsistent, and power outages, though not frequent, do occur. This can be a significant hurdle for those whose livelihoods depend on being online.

Another potential downside is the language barrier. Arabic is the official language, and while English is widely spoken, especially in the business and hospitality sectors, not being conversant in Arabic can limit your interaction with locals and make everyday tasks more challenging.

Transportation can also be a con for some. While Amman is serviced by ride-hailing apps like Uber and Careem, the public transport system is not as developed as in other cities. This means that getting around can be time-consuming and sometimes expensive if you're reliant on private transport options.

Lastly, while Jordan is known for its hospitality, cultural differences can lead to a sense of isolation for some expats. The pace of life and business practices can be quite different from what you're used to, and it may take time to adjust and find your community.

Despite these challenges, many digital nomads find Amman's pros outweigh the cons. The city's charm, coupled with its affordability and cultural richness, make it an intriguing option for those looking to experience life as a digital nomad in the Middle East. As with any international move, it's all about balance and finding the right fit for your lifestyle and work needs.
