Moving to Algeria - Guide to Residency in Algeria

Obtaining a residency visa in Algeria is not always easy, but our Guide to Residency in Algeria gives newcomers an overview of the steps involved and advice from others who have already navigated the process.

  • Research the types of residency permits available
    • Visit the official website of the Algerian Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities and National Planning to understand the different types of residency permits: Ministry of Interior (Note: The website may not be available in English).
    • Identify which category you fall into (e.g., work, family reunification, study).
  • Prepare the necessary documentation
    • Gather personal identification documents such as your passport and birth certificate.
    • Obtain a clean criminal record certificate from your home country.
    • Acquire proof of accommodation in Algeria, such as a rental agreement or property deed.
    • Get a medical certificate from an authorized clinic in Algeria, confirming you do not have any diseases that pose a public health threat.
  • Apply for a visa
    • Visit the Algerian embassy or consulate in your home country to apply for an entry visa appropriate to your situation (e.g., work visa, family visa).
    • Fill out the visa application form and submit it along with your passport, photos, and other required documents.
    • Pay the visa application fee and wait for processing.
  • Enter Algeria with your visa
    • Once your visa is approved, travel to Algeria and ensure you have all your documents for the residency application.
  • Apply for a Tax Number
    • Visit the nearest tax office in Algeria to apply for a tax identification number (Numéro d'Identification Fiscale, NIF).
    • Provide your passport, visa, and proof of address in Algeria.
    • Fill out the application form and submit it to the tax office.
  • Apply for residency status
    • Within 30 days of arrival, go to the local police station or town hall (commune) in the area where you reside in Algeria.
    • Request an application form for a residency permit (carte de résidence).
    • Complete the application form and submit it along with your passport, visa, tax number, proof of accommodation, medical certificate, and any other required documents.
    • Pay the residency permit application fee.
  • Attend an interview or appointment, if required
    • Be prepared to attend an interview or appointment with Algerian immigration authorities to discuss your application.
  • Wait for the residency permit to be processed
    • Processing times can vary, so be prepared to wait several weeks or months.
    • Keep a copy of your application receipt and any other correspondence.
  • Collect your residency permit
    • Once your application is approved, you will be notified to collect your residency permit from the local police station or town hall.
    • Verify that all the information on the permit is correct before leaving.
  • Renew your residency permit as needed
    • Be aware of the expiration date of your residency permit and apply for renewal well in advance.
    • Follow the same process for renewal, providing up-to-date documents and information.
Please note that the above steps are a general guide and the actual process may vary. It is important to check with the Algerian embassy or consulate for the most current and detailed information. Additionally, the availability of English language resources may be limited, and it is advisable to seek assistance from a local lawyer or immigration specialist in Algeria if needed.

What tips do digital nomads and expats have about residency and visas in Algeria?

"In order to visit Algeria, foreign nationals are required to obtain a visa from the embassy or consulate of Algeria abroad. The application process for a visa involves submitting the necessary documents, such as a passport, travel itinerary, and proof of financial means, to the diplomatic mission. Additionally, applicants may be required to provide evidence of their intention to return to their country of residence after their stay in Algeria. Individuals who wish to remain in Algeria for longer than three months will need to apply for a residency permit which is valid for a maximum of one year. The application will require providing documentation such as a valid passport, a police record certificate, a medical certificate and proof of funds. They must also provide details of their proposed activity in Algeria, such as working or studying, as well as a copy of their employment contract or school enrollment documents. The application must be accompanied by a fee and sent to the Ministry of Foreigners and Migration in Algeria. Further requirements may be asked for by the Algerian Ministry for consideration. After approval of the residency application, a residence card will be issued," commented one member living in Algeria.
