Summary: How to get residency in Ivory Coast. A Guide for Expats, Retirees and Immigrants in Ivory Coast.

Obtaining a residency visa in Ivory Coast is not always easy, but our Guide to Residency in Ivory Coast gives newcomers an overview of the steps involved and advice from others who have already navigated the process.

Please note that the following instructions are a general guide and the actual process may vary. It is important to consult with the Ivorian embassy or consulate, or the local authorities in Ivory Coast for the most current and detailed information. As of my knowledge cutoff in early 2023, here is a guide to obtaining residency status in Ivory Coast:

  • Research the types of residency permits
    • Visit the official website of the "Direction de la Surveillance du Territoire (DST)" or contact the Ivorian embassy to understand the different types of residency permits available.
    • Choose the type of residency permit that applies to your situation (e.g., work, family reunification, student, etc.).
  • Gather required documents
    • Prepare your passport with at least six months of validity.
    • Obtain a visa that allows entry into Ivory Coast, if applicable.
    • Collect documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, police clearance, and medical certificates.
    • Get passport-sized photographs as per the specifications provided by the Ivorian authorities.
  • Enter Ivory Coast
    • Travel to Ivory Coast with the appropriate visa.
    • Ensure you comply with all entry requirements, including any health-related protocols.
  • Apply for a Tax Number
    • Visit the local tax office ("Direction Générale des Impôts") to apply for a tax identification number (Numero d'Identifiant Unique - NUI).
    • Provide necessary documents such as your passport and proof of address in Ivory Coast.
    • Fill out the application form and submit it along with the required documents.
  • Apply for a residency permit
    • Go to the "Office National d'Identification (ONI)" or the local police station responsible for immigration matters.
    • Complete the residency permit application form.
    • Submit the application form along with all the required documents, including your tax number, proof of address, and any other documents specific to your residency category.
    • Pay the application fee, which varies depending on the type and duration of the residency permit.
  • Undergo a medical examination
    • Attend a medical examination at an authorized medical center as part of the residency application process.
    • Provide the medical certificate as proof of good health when requested.
  • Wait for the processing of your application
    • Residency permit processing times can vary, so be prepared to wait for the authorities to review your application.
    • Keep in touch with the immigration office for updates on your application status.
  • Collect your residency permit
    • Once your application is approved, you will be notified to collect your residency permit.
    • Verify that all the information on the permit is correct before leaving the immigration office.
  • Renew your residency permit as needed
    • Be aware of the expiration date of your residency permit and apply for renewal well in advance.
    • Follow the same process for renewal, which may require updated documents and additional fees.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information, please refer to the official websites of the Ivorian government or contact the nearest Ivorian embassy or consulate. Unfortunately, as of my knowledge cutoff date, many Ivorian government websites may not have English versions, and it is advisable to seek assistance from a local contact or a professional service if you are not fluent in French.
