Summary: As a digital nomad in Paris, keeping an eye on your budget is key. Here are 7 Free things to do in Paris.

Paris, the City of Light, is a dream destination for digital nomads who seek the perfect blend of work and wanderlust. While living in this iconic city can be expensive, there are plenty of free activities that allow you to soak up Parisian culture without spending a euro. From world-renowned landmarks to hidden gems, here are nine free things to do in Paris that will enrich your extended stay.

Louvre Museum

The Louvre Museum is one of the most famous museums in the world, and while it usually requires a ticket, you can enjoy free admission on the first Saturday of each month in the evening. Wander through the halls of this former royal palace and marvel at thousands of works of art, including the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. It's a fantastic way to experience high culture without the high cost.

Location: Rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris. The Louvre is centrally located, right by the Seine River.

Travel Tip: Arrive early to avoid the crowds that gather later in the evening, and download the Louvre's official app for a self-guided tour.

Nearby: After your visit, take a short walk to Café Marly for a coffee with a view of the Louvre's pyramid. This elegant spot is perfect for people-watching and soaking up the Parisian atmosphere.

Parc des Buttes-Chaumont

For a peaceful retreat from the urban hustle, visit the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont. This picturesque park features rolling hills, a serene lake, and winding paths perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic. The park also offers stunning views of the city from the Temple de la Sibylle, perched atop a cliff.

Location: 1 Rue Botzaris, 75019 Paris, France. Nestled in the 19th arrondissement, it's a bit off the beaten path.

Travel Tip: Bring a blanket and some local cheese and bread for an impromptu picnic with a view.

Nearby: Check out Rosa Bonheur, a popular guinguette within the park, known for its lively atmosphere and delicious small plates.

Notre-Dame Cathedral

Although it's currently under restoration after the 2019 fire, the exterior of Notre-Dame Cathedral remains an awe-inspiring sight. The cathedral's French Gothic architecture, with its flying buttresses and intricate facades, is a testament to the ingenuity of medieval craftsmen. The surrounding area, including the Seine River banks, is perfect for a leisurely walk.

Location: 6 Parvis Notre-Dame - Pl. Jean-Paul II, 75004 Paris, France. It's situated on the Île de la Cité, the historical heart of Paris.

Travel Tip: Visit in the evening to see the cathedral beautifully illuminated against the night sky.

Nearby: Enjoy a crepe or a coffee at the quaint Shakespeare and Company Café, just across from the cathedral.

Canal Saint-Martin

The Canal Saint-Martin is a favorite among locals and in-the-know visitors for its charming atmosphere and picturesque waterways. Lined with trendy boutiques, cozy cafes, and lush greenery, the canal is perfect for a relaxing walk or a bike ride. It's also a great spot for people-watching and experiencing the local Parisian lifestyle.

Location: Stretching from the Seine near Bastille to the Parc de la Villette in the 19th arrondissement.

Travel Tip: Visit on a Sunday when the canal-side roads are closed to traffic, making it a pedestrian paradise.

Nearby: Stop by Du Pain et des Idées for some of the best traditional French bread and pastries in the area.

Père Lachaise Cemetery

Père Lachaise Cemetery is not only the final resting place of famous figures like Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, and Edith Piaf, but it's also a beautiful open-air gallery of funerary art. Stroll through the cobblestone paths, admire the ornate tombs, and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of this historic site.

Location: 16 Rue du Repos, 75020 Paris, France. Located in the 20th arrondissement, it's a bit of a hidden gem.

Travel Tip: Grab a map at the entrance or download one online to help navigate the cemetery's vast grounds.

Nearby: After your visit, relax at the nearby Le Papillon, a classic Parisian café with a friendly atmosphere.

Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen

The Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen, often simply referred to as Les Puces, is the largest antique market in the world. Even if you're not looking to buy, wandering through the myriad stalls and shops is like taking a step back in time. You'll find everything from vintage clothing to rare books and eclectic furniture.

Location: Avenue de la Porte de Clignancourt, 93400 Saint-Ouen, France. It's on the outskirts of Paris but easily accessible by metro.

Travel Tip: Go early to beat the crowds and have the best chance at finding hidden treasures.

Nearby: Refuel with a hearty meal at Chez Louisette, a lively bistro within the market that often features live French music.

Wallace Fountains

The Wallace Fountains are a series of iconic drinking fountains scattered throughout Paris, designed by Sir Richard Wallace in the 19th century. These elegant cast-iron fountains are not only beautiful works of art but also provide fresh drinking water to passersby. Embark on a scavenger hunt to find as many as you can, and appreciate their contribution to the city's aesthetic and public service.

Location: Various locations across Paris.

Travel Tip: Keep a refillable water bottle with you to take advantage of the fountains' clean, free water as you explore the city.

Nearby: Many fountains are located near popular cafes; one such spot is Café de Flore, a historic café in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

La Promenade Plantée

La Promenade Plantée, also known as the Coulée Verte René-Dumont, is an elevated park built on a former railway line. This green oasis stretches for nearly 3 miles, offering a unique perspective of the city. It's a perfect spot for a jog, a leisurely walk, or simply a quiet moment surrounded by greenery and flowers.

Location: Begins at Bastille and runs to the Bois de Vincennes in the 12th arrondissement.

Travel Tip: Visit in the spring or summer when the plants are in full bloom for the most picturesque experience.

Nearby: Enjoy a well-deserved break at Le Viaduc Café, located directly under the promenade, known for its lovely terrace and fresh dishes.

Montmartre Vineyard

Tucked away in the charming district of Montmartre is the last remaining vineyard in Paris, Clos Montmartre. This small patch of vines is a surprising find in the urban landscape and is usually open to the public during the annual Fête des Vendanges in October. However, you can still view the vineyard from the outside and enjoy the romantic ambiance of the Montmartre neighborhood year-round.

Location: Rue des Saules, 75018 Paris, France. It's nestled in the heart of Montmartre, close to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica.

Travel Tip: While the vineyard itself is not always open, the surrounding area is full of artistic history and worth exploring.

Nearby: Stop by La Maison Rose, a picturesque pink-painted café that has been a favorite among artists for decades.

These free attractions offer a wealth of experiences for digital nomads living in Paris, allowing you to immerse yourself in the city's culture and history without breaking the bank. Whether you're seeking inspiration, relaxation, or adventure, Paris has something to offer every kind of traveler.
