Summary: As a digital nomad in Singapore, keeping an eye on your budget is key. Here are 7 Free things to do in Singapore.

Singapore is a vibrant city-state that offers a unique blend of modernity and tradition, making it an ideal destination for digital nomads looking for a dynamic environment to work and explore. While living costs can be high, there are plenty of free activities to enjoy that can help balance your budget. From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, Singapore has a wealth of experiences that won't cost a dime. Here are nine free things to do in Singapore that cater to both popular tastes and those seeking the road less traveled.

Gardens by the Bay

One of Singapore's most iconic attractions, Gardens by the Bay, is a futuristic park with stunning waterfront views. While the famous Supertree Grove and outdoor gardens are free to enter, there are ticketed attractions within. The Supertrees are especially captivating at night when they come alive with a dazzling light and sound show, known as the Garden Rhapsody. This is a must-visit for anyone wanting to experience the blend of nature and technology that Singapore is known for.

Location: 18 Marina Gardens Dr, Singapore 018953. The park is located next to the Marina Reservoir.

Travel Tip: The light show happens twice nightly, and it's best to arrive early to secure a good spot on the lawn beneath the Supertrees.

Nearby: Satay by the Bay is a nearby food court offering a variety of local dishes, including the namesake satay skewers, which are a must-try.

The Southern Ridges

For those who love nature and hiking, The Southern Ridges offers a 10-kilometer trail connecting parks along the southern ridge of Singapore. It provides panoramic views of the city, harbor, and the Southern Islands. Highlights include the Henderson Waves bridge and the Forest Walk, an elevated walkway through the canopy of the secondary forest. It's a great way to escape the urban bustle and immerse yourself in Singapore's green spaces.

Location: The trail connects Mount Faber Park to Labrador Nature Reserve. Start at Mount Faber Park for a scenic route.

Travel Tip: Bring water and wear comfortable shoes, as the trail can take several hours to complete.

Nearby: After your hike, refresh at the nearby HortPark, which has a café where you can relax and enjoy a well-deserved break.

Haw Par Villa

Haw Par Villa is an eclectic park filled with colorful dioramas and statues depicting scenes from Chinese mythology, folklore, and history. It's known for its depiction of the Ten Courts of Hell, which offers a glimpse into traditional beliefs about the afterlife. This attraction is both fascinating and surreal, providing a unique cultural experience that's unlike any other in Singapore.

Location: 262 Pasir Panjang Rd, Singapore 118628. It's situated on the west coast of Singapore.

Travel Tip: Be prepared for some graphic scenes in the Ten Courts of Hell, which may not be suitable for young children.

Nearby: There's a small food court within the park where you can try local snacks and drinks.

MacRitchie Reservoir Park

MacRitchie Reservoir Park is a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The park offers several trails, including the popular TreeTop Walk, a suspension bridge that provides a bird's eye view of the forest canopy. It's an excellent spot for jogging, kayaking, or simply enjoying the tranquility of the reservoir's waters.

Location: MacRitchie Reservoir Park, Singapore 298717. The park is in the central area of Singapore, accessible by public transport.

Travel Tip: Visit early in the morning to avoid the heat and to have a better chance of spotting wildlife.

Nearby: Casuarina Curry at MacRitchie is a short drive away and is famous for its crispy prata, a type of Indian pancake.

Singapore Botanic Gardens

The Singapore Botanic Gardens is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a verdant oasis in the heart of the city. It's home to a vast array of plant species, including the National Orchid Garden, which has an entrance fee, but the rest of the gardens are free to explore. The gardens are perfect for a leisurely stroll, a picnic, or even a spot of outdoor yoga.

Location: 1 Cluny Rd, Singapore 259569. The gardens are centrally located and easily accessible by public transport.

Travel Tip: Check out the free guided tours that are available on Saturdays – a great way to learn more about the flora and fauna.

Nearby: The Halia at Singapore Botanic Gardens offers contemporary cuisine and is a lovely spot to dine amidst the greenery.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is a lesser-known treasure for those seeking a challenging hike. It's one of the few areas of primary rainforest left in Singapore and is home to a rich diversity of plant and animal life. The reserve includes Singapore's highest hill, Bukit Timah Hill, which provides a rewarding view at the summit.

Location: Hindhede Dr, Singapore 589318. Located in the western part of Singapore, it's a bit more secluded but worth the trip.

Travel Tip: The trails can be steep and slippery, so wear appropriate footwear and watch out for monkeys that may be attracted to food.

Nearby: After your hike, head to the nearby Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre for a variety of local dishes.

East Coast Park

East Coast Park is a scenic coastline park that stretches over 15 kilometers. It's a popular spot for cycling, rollerblading, and picnicking. With barbecue pits and a sandy beach, it's a great place to relax and enjoy the sea breeze. The park also features outdoor fitness equipment and playgrounds, making it ideal for a family outing.

Location: East Coast Park Service Rd, Singapore. The park runs along the southeastern coast of Singapore.

Travel Tip: Rent a bike or bring your own to explore the park's extensive network of cycling paths.

Nearby: The East Coast Lagoon Food Village offers a variety of local seafood and is a perfect spot to refuel after a day at the park.

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is a nature reserve located in the northwest of Singapore. It's a peaceful sanctuary for migratory birds and a variety of other wildlife. The reserve features walking trails and observation hides where you can quietly observe the natural inhabitants. It's an excellent place for birdwatching and photography.

Travel Tip: Bring binoculars and a camera with a good zoom lens to make the most of your wildlife spotting.

Nearby: There aren't many food options nearby, so it's a good idea to pack a snack or lunch to enjoy during your visit.

The Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay

The Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay is not only an architectural marvel but also a hub for the arts. The complex regularly hosts free performances in various genres, from music to dance to theatre. You can enjoy these performances at the outdoor stage with the city skyline as a backdrop. It's a fantastic way to experience Singapore's cultural scene without spending a cent.

Location: 1 Esplanade Dr, Singapore 038981. It's located in the Marina Bay area, easily accessible and hard to miss with its distinctive spiky roof.
