Summary: Planning a quick weekend getaway is a great way to save money while still seeing new places. Here are 7 fun weekend getaways for digital nomads living in Bucharest.

Bucharest, the vibrant capital of Romania, is not only a hub for digital nomads seeking a mix of culture, history, and modern amenities but also a perfect starting point for exploring the country's diverse landscapes and hidden gems. While the city itself offers plenty to keep one entertained, sometimes a weekend getaway is just what you need to recharge. From popular tourist spots to off-the-beaten-path destinations, here are seven fantastic places to escape to for a weekend of adventure, relaxation, and new experiences.

Brasov

Nestled in the heart of Transylvania, Brasov is a popular destination for its medieval charm, stunning architecture, and proximity to the Carpathian Mountains. Wander through the cobbled streets of the old town, visit the iconic Black Church, and take a cable car up to Tampa Mountain for breathtaking views of the city. In winter, the nearby Poiana Brasov resort offers excellent skiing opportunities.

How to Get There: Brasov is easily accessible by train from Bucharest, with journeys taking approximately 2.5 hours. There are frequent services daily from Bucharest's main railway station, Gara de Nord.

Travel Tip: Don't miss the chance to explore the nearby Bran Castle, often associated with the Dracula legend, for a taste of local folklore and history.

Where to Stay: The Aro Palace offers luxury accommodations with stunning views of the city, while Casa Wagner provides a more intimate experience in the heart of the old town.

Where to Eat: La Ceaun is a must-visit for traditional Romanian cuisine, serving dishes like sarmale (cabbage rolls) and polenta with cheese and sour cream.

Sinaia

The mountain resort town of Sinaia, known as the "Pearl of the Carpathians," is a haven for nature lovers and history enthusiasts. Visit the exquisite Peles Castle, a former royal residence and one of Romania's most beautiful palaces. Enjoy hiking or skiing in the surrounding Bucegi Mountains, and don't miss the Sinaia Monastery, with its rich religious artifacts and peaceful atmosphere.

How to Get There: Sinaia is about 1.5 hours by train from Bucharest. Trains run frequently throughout the day from Gara de Nord.

Travel Tip: For a unique experience, take the gondola lift to Cota 1400 or Cota 2000 for panoramic mountain views and access to various hiking trails.

Where to Stay: Hotel International offers comfort and modern amenities, while the boutique Ioana Hotels provides a cozy mountain retreat.

Where to Eat: The Forest Restaurant offers a fine dining experience with a menu that highlights local ingredients and traditional dishes.

Comana Adventure Park

For those seeking an adrenaline rush, Comana Adventure Park is an unusual and exciting destination. Located within the Comana Natural Park, this adventure park offers activities such as zip-lining, archery, and climbing. It's a great way to enjoy the outdoors and challenge yourself physically while being surrounded by the beauty of nature.

How to Get There: Comana Adventure Park is about an hour's drive from Bucharest. Public transportation options are limited, so renting a car or taking a taxi is recommended.

Travel Tip: After your adventures, take a leisurely boat ride on the Neajlov River to unwind and enjoy the serene environment.

Where to Stay: While there are no hotels directly in the park, nearby Giurgiu offers accommodations such as Hotel Sud, which provides comfortable rooms and easy access to the park.

Where to Eat: The park has a few snack bars, but for a more substantial meal, head to the nearby town of Giurgiu for a variety of dining options.

The Mud Volcanoes (Vulcanii Noroiosi)

The Mud Volcanoes, located in Buzau County, are a geological and natural wonder that's off the typical tourist path. These small volcano-shaped structures created by the eruption of mud and natural gases are a unique sight and offer a lunar-like landscape for visitors to explore. It's an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts and those looking for something truly different.

How to Get There: The Mud Volcanoes are best reached by car, as public transport options are limited. The drive from Bucharest takes about 2 hours.

Travel Tip: Wear old shoes or boots, as the mud can be quite sticky and may ruin your footwear.

Where to Stay: In the nearby town of Buzau, Pietroasa Hotel provides comfortable accommodations and is a good base for exploring the region.

Where to Eat: Casa Matei in Buzau offers a selection of traditional Romanian dishes in a cozy, rustic setting.

Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria

Venture outside Romania for a weekend in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, a medieval city perched on the hills above the Yantra River. Known for its fortress, Tsarevets, which was the seat of the Bulgarian emperors, the city is rich in history and culture. Stroll through the old town's winding streets, visit the many churches and museums, and enjoy the vibrant arts and crafts scene.

How to Get There: Veliko Tarnovo is about a 4-hour drive from Bucharest. There are also bus services available, which may take longer due to border crossing.

Travel Tip: Attend the Sound and Light Show at Tsarevets Fortress, a spectacular audiovisual performance that brings the history of the fortress to life.

Where to Stay: The Yantra Grand Hotel offers luxury accommodations with stunning views of the fortress, while the cozy Gurko Hotel provides a charming experience in the old town.

Where to Eat: Shtastlivetsa is a local favorite, offering a modern twist on Bulgarian cuisine with a terrace that overlooks the historical city.

Corbu Beach

For a seaside escape, head to Corbu Beach, one of the wildest and most pristine beaches on the Romanian Black Sea coast. It's a perfect spot for digital nomads looking to disconnect and enjoy the simplicity of nature. The beach is part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, offering opportunities for bird watching and exploring the nearby lagoons and sand dunes.

How to Get There: Corbu Beach is approximately a 3-hour drive from Bucharest. Public transportation is not readily available, so driving is the best option.

Travel Tip: Bring your own supplies, as the area is quite remote and facilities are minimal. It's the perfect place for a quiet picnic or a beach bonfire.

Where to Stay: While there are no hotels directly on Corbu Beach, the nearby town of Navodari offers accommodations such as Vila Sangria, known for its comfortable rooms and friendly service.

Where to Eat: For fresh seafood, visit Cherhana Corbu, a local fishery that serves up the catch of the day in a traditional setting.

Govora Baths

Govora Baths is a lesser-known spa town that offers therapeutic treatments and a chance to relax in a tranquil setting. The town is known for its healing mineral waters and clean air, making it an ideal place for health and wellness retreats. Take a dip in the thermal baths, enjoy a spa treatment, or simply relax in the peaceful parks and gardens.

How to Get There: The journey to Govora Baths from Bucharest can take around 3 hours by car. There are also train and bus options available, but these may involve transfers and longer travel times.

Travel Tip: Visit the nearby Clocota Waterfall for a refreshing hike and the chance to see a beautiful natural feature of the region.

Where to Stay: Hotel Palace offers a range of spa services and treatments, as well as comfortable accommodations in a historic setting.

Where to Eat: The restaurant at Hotel Palace serves a variety of dishes, with a focus on healthy, balanced meals that complement the wellness experience.
