Living in Antwerp - Pros & Cons of Living in Antwerp

Thinking about to Antwerp? Below we highlight some of the pros and cons of living in Antwerp.

Antwerp's second-largest city, is a charming blend of medieval history and modern vibrancy, making it an enticing destination for digital nomads. Known for its striking architecture, artistic heritage, and bustling port, Antwerp offers a unique lifestyle that combines work and cultural immersion. But what are the advantages and disadvantages of setting up your remote work base in this Flemish city? Let's delve into the pros and cons of living in Antwerp, Belgium, as a digital nomad.

Pros of Living in Antwerp, Belgium as a Digital Nomad

Antwerp is a haven for digital nomads seeking a high quality of life. The city is incredibly walkable and bike-friendly, with a well-connected public transportation system, making it easy to explore its charming cobblestone streets and hidden courtyards. One of the most notable advantages is the city's thriving cultural scene. From the iconic Rubens House to the contemporary MAS Museum, Antwerp is a treasure trove for art lovers. Digital nomad and travel blogger, Emma, recalls, "I was amazed by how much there was to see and do in Antwerp. Every weekend felt like a mini-vacation, with new galleries, museums, and parks to explore."

For remote workers, reliable internet is a must, and Antwerp delivers. The city is well-equipped with high-speed internet, and there are numerous co-working spaces and cafes tailored to digital nomads. One such space, Fosbury & Sons, offers not only a productive work environment but also networking opportunities with like-minded professionals. Furthermore, Antwerp's strategic location in the heart of Europe makes it an ideal base for traveling. With Brussels Airport just a short train ride away, exploring neighboring countries is a breeze.

Food enthusiasts will delight in Antwerp's culinary scene. From traditional Belgian waffles and fries to innovative vegan cuisine, the city caters to all tastes. The local markets, such as the historic Groenplaats, offer fresh produce and regional specialties, allowing digital nomads to immerse themselves in the local food culture. Plus, Belgium's renowned beer scene is not to be missed, with countless breweries and beer halls to explore.

Cons of Living in Antwerp, Belgium as a Digital Nomad

While Antwerp has much to offer, there are some challenges to consider. One of the primary drawbacks is the cost of living, which can be relatively high compared to other European cities. Accommodation, in particular, can be expensive, especially in the city center. Digital nomad and software developer, Alex, shares, "Finding affordable housing in Antwerp was a challenge. I ended up living a bit outside the city center, which meant a longer commute to my co-working space."

Another potential hurdle is the language barrier. While many locals speak excellent English, the official language is Dutch (Flemish). This can make navigating bureaucratic processes, such as opening a bank account or dealing with government offices, somewhat challenging. Additionally, integrating into the local community may take more effort for non-Dutch speakers.

Lastly, the weather in Antwerp can be a bit dreary, with frequent rain and cool temperatures, even in the summer. This may not be ideal for digital nomads who prefer a warmer climate. However, the city's numerous indoor cultural attractions and cozy cafes provide ample opportunities to escape the rain. As Emma puts it, "Antwerp's weather took some getting used to, but I found that the city's charm and warmth made up for the occasional gray day."

Antwerp, with its rich cultural tapestry, excellent connectivity, and vibrant food scene, is an attractive destination for digital nomads. However, the high cost of living, language barrier, and less-than-perfect weather are factors to consider. Ultimately, whether Antwerp is the right fit depends on your personal preferences and priorities. But one thing is certain: this enchanting city promises an unforgettable experience for those willing to embrace its unique rhythm.
