Summary: Planning a potential move to Calgary? Delve into this comprehensive article, which delves into the various pros and cons of calling Calgary home.

Thinking about to Calgary? Below we highlight some of the pros and cons of living in Calgary.

Nestled in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, Calgary is a vibrant city that has gained traction as a hub for digital nomads. With its unique blend of urban living and outdoor adventure, it's no surprise that many remote workers are considering making Calgary their home base. But what are the pros and cons of living in Calgary as a digital nomad? Let's dive in.

Pros of Living in Calgary as a Digital Nomad

Outdoor Lifestyle: Calgary is a dream come true for nature enthusiasts. With the Rocky Mountains just a stone's throw away, you can hit the slopes at world-class ski resorts like Banff Sunshine or Lake Louise in the morning and be back in the city for a client meeting in the afternoon. The city itself is also brimming with green spaces, like Fish Creek Provincial Park, one of the largest urban parks in Canada.

Thriving Tech Scene: Calgary is quickly becoming a major player in the tech industry, with a growing number of startups and innovation hubs. This means plenty of networking opportunities and a supportive community for digital nomads. The city is even home to a Tech Alliance, which hosts events and provides resources for tech entrepreneurs.

Cowtown Culture: Calgary isn't all business; it has a rich cultural scene, too. Known as "Cowtown" for its Western roots, the city hosts the famous Calgary Stampede every July, a massive celebration of cowboy culture. Throughout the year, you can enjoy a vibrant arts scene, with numerous festivals, museums, and galleries.

Café Culture: Calgary has a burgeoning café culture, perfect for digital nomads who like to work from cozy coffee shops. From local favorite Phil & Sebastian to the trendy Alforno Bakery & Café, you'll never run out of places to set up your laptop.

Cons of Living in Calgary, Canada as a Digital Nomad

Weather Woes: Calgary's weather can be a shock for those who aren't used to harsh winters. Temperatures can dip as low as -30°C (-22°F), and snowstorms can hit as early as October. On the flip side, summers can be quite hot, with temperatures reaching 30°C (86°F). The unpredictable weather, including sudden chinook winds that can dramatically raise temperatures, can take some getting used to.

Cost of Living: While not as expensive as cities like Toronto or Vancouver, Calgary's cost of living can still be high. Housing, in particular, can be pricey, especially if you want to live in the city center. A one-bedroom apartment in the downtown core can cost around CAD 1,500 per month.

Limited Public Transportation: Unlike some other major cities, Calgary's public transportation system is somewhat limited. While there is a light rail system (the CTrain) and a bus network, the service can be infrequent, and the system isn't as extensive as those in cities like Montreal or Toronto. Many Calgarians rely on cars to get around, which can be a hassle for digital nomads who prefer to rely on public transit.

Internet Connectivity: While Calgary has made strides in improving its internet infrastructure, some digital nomads may still find the speeds and reliability lacking compared to other major cities. However, this can vary greatly depending on where you live and work in the city.

Calgary offers a unique blend of urban living and outdoor adventure, making it an appealing choice for digital nomads. However, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons, from the thriving tech scene to the harsh winters, before making the move. Whether you're a nature lover, a tech enthusiast, or a coffee shop connoisseur, Calgary has something to offer everyone.
