Summary: Many expats and digital nomads move to Algeria for its low cost of living, diverse culture, and unique opportunities for work and travel. People can find a place to live in Algeria by searching online for rental properties, or by asking friends and family for recommendations. The most popular cities for expats and digital nomads in Algeria are Algiers, Oran, and Constantine.

What do I need to know before moving to Algeria?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Algeria, they said:

"Expats should be aware that Algeria is a predominantly Muslim country and that Islamic customs and laws are observed. It is important to be respectful of local customs and traditions. Expats should also be aware that the official language is Arabic, although French is widely spoken. It is advisable to learn some basic Arabic before moving to Algeria. Expats should also be aware that the cost of living in Algeria is relatively low, but that the country has a limited infrastructure and limited access to goods and services. Finally, expats should be aware that Algeria is a very conservative country and that public displays of affection are not tolerated," remarked one expat in Algeria.

How do I find a place to live in Algeria?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One of the best ways to find a place to live in Algeria is to search online for rental listings. There are many websites that offer listings of apartments, houses, and other types of rental properties in Algeria. Additionally, you can also search for rental listings in local newspapers and classifieds. Additionally, you can also ask friends and family who live in Algeria for recommendations. Finally, you can also contact real estate agents in Algeria who specialize in rental properties," explained one expat living in Algeria.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Algeria?

"Expat homes and apartments in Algeria tend to be modern and comfortable, with amenities such as air conditioning, internet access, and satellite television. Many expats choose to live in gated communities, which offer additional security and access to amenities such as swimming pools and gyms. Expat homes and apartments in Algeria are typically spacious and well-furnished, with plenty of room for entertaining guests," said one expat in Algeria.

What is the average cost of housing in Algeria?

If you are thinking about moving to Algeria, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Algeria varies depending on the location and type of housing. Generally, housing in Algeria is relatively affordable compared to other countries in the region. Rent for an apartment in a city center can range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars per month, while rent for a house in a rural area can be much lower," remarked one expat in Algeria.

Should I buy or rent a home in Algeria?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Algeria, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"When deciding whether to buy or rent a home in Algeria, it is important to consider your financial situation, lifestyle, and long-term goals. Buying a home can be a great investment, as it can provide you with a stable place to live and the potential for appreciation in value. However, it also requires a large upfront investment and ongoing maintenance costs. Renting a home can be a more affordable option, as it requires less of an upfront investment and no maintenance costs. However, it does not provide the same potential for appreciation in value. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Algeria should be based on your individual needs and preferences," said one expat in Algeria.

What should I pack when moving to Algeria?

We asked people living in Algeria to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Algeria, it is important to pack items that will help you adjust to the climate and culture. Pack clothing that is lightweight and breathable, as temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius in the summer. Bring a few items of warm clothing for the winter months, as temperatures can drop to below 10 degrees Celsius. It is also important to bring a few items of modest clothing, as Algeria is a conservative country. Additionally, pack any necessary medications, toiletries, and other personal items. Don't forget to bring a few items to help you adjust to the culture, such as books about the language and culture of Algeria," remarked one expat in Algeria.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Algeria?

We asked people in Algeria if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"I went to a store, and speak English, the seller yell ' eee sinuiyyaa', which means, she is a Chinese. I am not a Chinese, but here people call all non-european foreigners Chinese," said one expat who made the move to Annaba.
