What do I need to know before moving to Azerbaijan?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Azerbaijan, they said:

"Check out traffic patterns before you lease during rush hour -- it can take 2 hours to drive 5 kilometers at rush hour on a Friday evening when the wedding palaces are having their parties -- it isn't even possible to park and walk home because the traffic is so dysfunctional," said one expat in Baku.

"Azerbaijan is a culturally diverse country with a rich history and a unique language. Expats should be aware that the official language is Azerbaijani, although Russian is widely spoken. Expats should also be aware that the country is predominantly Muslim, and that religious customs and traditions should be respected. Additionally, expats should be aware that the cost of living in Azerbaijan is relatively low, and that the country offers a wide range of leisure activities and attractions. Finally, expats should be aware that the country has a temperate climate, with hot summers and cold winters," remarked one expat who made the move to Azerbaijan.

How do I find a place to live in Azerbaijan?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One of the best ways to find a place to live in Azerbaijan is to search online for rental listings. There are many websites that offer listings of apartments, houses, and other types of rental properties in Azerbaijan. Additionally, you can also search for rental listings in local newspapers and classifieds. Additionally, you can also contact real estate agents in Azerbaijan who specialize in rental properties. They can provide you with more information about available rental properties and help you find the perfect place to live," said one expat who made the move to Azerbaijan.

"Expat homes and apartments in Azerbaijan tend to be modern and comfortable, with many featuring modern amenities such as air conditioning, high-speed internet, and satellite television. Expats often choose to live in larger cities such as Baku, where they can find a wide range of housing options, from luxury apartments to more affordable options. Many expats also choose to live in smaller towns and villages, where they can enjoy a more traditional lifestyle and experience the local culture," commented one expat who made the move to Azerbaijan.

What is the average cost of housing in Azerbaijan?

If you are thinking about moving to Azerbaijan, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Azerbaijan varies depending on the location and type of property. Generally, the cost of renting an apartment in the capital city of Baku is higher than in other parts of the country. Prices for apartments in Baku range from around $400 to $1,500 per month, while in other cities and towns, the cost of renting an apartment can be as low as $200 per month," explained one expat living in Azerbaijan.

Should I buy or rent a home in Azerbaijan?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Azerbaijan, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"Buying a home in Azerbaijan can be a great investment, as the country is experiencing rapid economic growth. However, it is important to consider the cost of living in Azerbaijan, as well as the availability of housing in the area. Renting a home in Azerbaijan can be a more affordable option, and it can also provide more flexibility if you are not sure how long you will be staying in the country. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Azerbaijan should be based on your individual needs and financial situation," remarked one expat who made the move to Azerbaijan.

What should I pack when moving to Azerbaijan?

We asked people living in Azerbaijan to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Azerbaijan, it is important to pack items that will help you adjust to the climate and culture. Pack clothing that is appropriate for the hot summers and cold winters, such as light, breathable fabrics for the summer and warm, layered clothing for the winter. Bring comfortable shoes for walking and exploring the country. Additionally, pack items that will help you adjust to the culture, such as traditional clothing and items that reflect the local customs. Don't forget to bring any necessary documents, such as your passport, visa, and other important paperwork. Finally, make sure to bring any items that will make you feel at home, such as photos, books, and other personal items," said one expat in Azerbaijan.

"Leave bicycles at home. Bring patio furniture, more clothing and shoes, dog food, cat food, and cat litter," remarked one expat who made the move to Baku.

"No, I've been pretty good! I do forget to serve bread at meals sometimes (Azeris can't eat a meal without bread), but nothing major," said one expat who made the move to Baku.
