What do I need to know before moving to Botswana?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Botswana, they said:

"Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, bordered by South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It is a relatively safe and stable country with a strong economy and a growing expat community. Expats should be aware that English is the official language of Botswana, although Setswana is widely spoken. The cost of living in Botswana is generally lower than in other countries in the region, but expats should be prepared for the high cost of imported goods. Expats should also be aware that Botswana has a hot and dry climate, with temperatures reaching up to 40°C in the summer months. Finally, expats should be aware that Botswana has a very strict visa policy, and should research the requirements before making the move," said one expat in Botswana.

How do I find a place to live in Botswana?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One of the best ways to find a place to live in Botswana is to search online for rental listings. Websites such as Property24, Private Property, and Botswana Property Guide are great resources for finding rental properties in Botswana. Additionally, you can also search for rental listings on classifieds websites such as Gumtree and OLX. Additionally, you can also contact local real estate agents who can help you find a suitable rental property. Lastly, you can also ask around in your local community for any available rental properties," explained one expat living in Botswana.

Expats can also find furnished apartments, which come with all the necessary furniture and appliances," explained one expat living in Botswana.

The average cost of a two-bedroom apartment in the capital city of Gaborone is around $500 per month, while a three-bedroom house in a rural area can cost around $200 per month," explained one expat living in Botswana.

Should I buy or rent a home in Botswana?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Botswana, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"When deciding whether to buy or rent a home in Botswana, it is important to consider your financial situation, lifestyle, and long-term goals. Buying a home can be a great investment, as it can provide you with a stable place to live and the potential for appreciation in value. However, it also requires a large upfront investment and ongoing maintenance costs. Renting a home can be a more affordable option, as it requires less of an upfront investment and no maintenance costs. However, it does not provide the same potential for appreciation in value. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Botswana should be based on your individual needs and preferences," remarked one expat who made the move to Botswana.

It is also important to bring a good supply of sunscreen and insect repellent. Additionally, it is a good idea to bring a first aid kit, as well as any necessary medications. It is also important to bring a good supply of cash, as well as a valid passport and other necessary travel documents. Finally, it is a good idea to bring a few items to make your new home feel more comfortable, such as pictures, books, and other personal items," commented one expat who made the move to Botswana.
