What do I need to know before moving to Zambia?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Zambia, they said:

"Expats should be aware that Zambia is a developing country and that the infrastructure and services may not be as advanced as in other countries. It is important to research the cost of living in Zambia before moving, as prices can vary significantly depending on the area. Expats should also be aware that English is the official language of Zambia, but many locals also speak Bemba, Nyanja, and Tonga. It is also important to research the local laws and customs before moving to Zambia, as these can vary significantly from other countries. Finally, expats should be aware that the healthcare system in Zambia is not as advanced as in other countries, so it is important to have adequate health insurance before moving," said one expat in Zambia.

How do I find a place to live in Zambia?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One of the best ways to find a place to live in Zambia is to search online for rental listings. Websites such as Zameen.com, Zambia Property, and Zambia Real Estate are great resources for finding rental properties in Zambia. Additionally, you can also search for rental listings on classifieds websites such as Craigslist and Gumtree. Additionally, you can also contact local real estate agents who can help you find a suitable place to live in Zambia. Finally, you can also ask around in your local community for recommendations on rental properties," commented one expat who made the move to Zambia.

Many expats choose to live in gated communities, which offer additional security and access to amenities such as swimming pools, gyms, and tennis courts. Expat homes and apartments in Zambia are typically spacious and well-furnished, with plenty of room for entertaining guests," explained one expat living in Zambia.

What is the average cost of housing in Zambia?

If you are thinking about moving to Zambia, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Zambia varies greatly depending on the location and type of housing. Generally, housing in urban areas tends to be more expensive than in rural areas. Prices for rental properties range from low-cost, basic housing to more expensive, modern apartments. The cost of purchasing a home also varies depending on the size and location. In general, housing in Zambia is relatively affordable compared to other countries in the region," remarked one expat who made the move to Zambia.

Should I buy or rent a home in Zambia?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Zambia, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"When deciding whether to buy or rent a home in Zambia, it is important to consider your financial situation, lifestyle, and long-term goals. Buying a home can be a great investment, as it can provide you with a stable place to live and the potential for appreciation in value. However, it also requires a large upfront investment and ongoing maintenance costs. Renting a home can be a more affordable option, as it requires less of an upfront investment and no maintenance costs. However, it does not provide the same potential for appreciation in value. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Zambia should be based on your individual needs and preferences," remarked one expat in Zambia.

What should I pack when moving to Zambia?

We asked people living in Zambia to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Zambia, it is important to pack clothing suitable for the climate. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are best for the hot and humid weather. It is also important to bring a good supply of sunscreen and insect repellent. Additionally, it is recommended to bring a first aid kit, a flashlight, and a multi-purpose tool. It is also a good idea to bring a few items to make your new home feel more comfortable, such as pictures, books, and other personal items. Finally, it is important to bring any necessary documents, such as a passport, visa, and other important paperwork," commented one expat who made the move to Zambia.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Zambia?

We asked people in Zambia if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"In Zambia, it is important to be respectful of local customs and traditions. It is considered rude to point with your finger, so it is best to use an open hand when gesturing. It is also important to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. Avoid discussing politics or religion in public, as these topics can be sensitive. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local language and to be respectful when speaking to locals," remarked one expat who made the move to Zambia.

How are healthcare services Zambia?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Zambia, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Zambia are provided by both public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is funded by the government and is available to all citizens of Zambia. The quality of public healthcare varies depending on the region, but generally it is considered to be of a lower standard than private healthcare. Foreign residents do have access to the public healthcare system, but they may be required to pay for some services. Expats in Zambia generally use the private healthcare system, as it is more reliable and of a higher quality than the public system," wrote one expat living in Zambia.

What are medical services in Zambia like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Zambia, they replied:

"Zambia has a public health system that provides basic medical services to its citizens. The country has a network of health centers and hospitals that offer primary care services such as immunizations, antenatal care, and family planning. Zambia also has a number of private health facilities that provide more specialized services such as surgery, radiology, and laboratory services. The country has a shortage of medical personnel, however, and many of the health centers and hospitals are understaffed and lack adequate resources. Despite these challenges, the government is working to improve access to healthcare and has implemented a number of initiatives to increase the availability of medical services," stated one expat who made the move to Zambia.
