What do I need to know before moving to Ivory Coast?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Ivory Coast, they said:

"Before moving to Ivory Coast, expats should be aware of the country's tropical climate and the potential for extreme weather conditions. Expats should also be aware of the language barrier, as French is the official language of Ivory Coast. It is also important to research the local customs and culture, as well as the cost of living in the country. Additionally, expats should ensure that they have the necessary visas and permits to live and work in Ivory Coast. Finally, expats should make sure to have adequate health insurance coverage in case of any medical emergencies," remarked one expat in Ivory Coast.

How do I find a place to live in Ivory Coast?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"If you are looking for a place to live in Ivory Coast, there are a few options available. You can search online for rental properties, or contact a local real estate agent who can help you find a suitable place. You can also look for furnished apartments or houses for rent in the major cities such as Abidjan, Bouaké, and Yamoussoukro. Additionally, you can look for shared accommodation with other expats or locals. Expat homes and apartments often have balconies or terraces, allowing for outdoor living and entertaining. Security is also a priority for many expats, and many homes and apartments have security guards and gates," said one expat in Ivory Coast.

If you are thinking about moving to Ivory Coast, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Ivory Coast varies depending on the location and type of accommodation. Generally, rental prices for apartments in the city centre are higher than those in the suburbs. Prices for furnished apartments range from moderate to expensive, while unfurnished apartments tend to be more affordable. Additionally, the cost of housing in rural areas is usually lower than in urban areas," said one expat in Ivory Coast.

Should I buy or rent a home in Ivory Coast?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Ivory Coast, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"When deciding whether to buy or rent a home in Ivory Coast, it is important to consider the cost of living, the availability of housing, and the local economy. Buying a home in Ivory Coast can be a great investment, as property values are likely to increase over time. However, it is important to consider the cost of purchasing a home, including the cost of a mortgage, taxes, and maintenance. Renting a home in Ivory Coast can be a more affordable option, as it does not require a large upfront investment. Additionally, renting can provide more flexibility, as it is easier to move if needed. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Ivory Coast should be based on individual needs and preferences," said one expat in Ivory Coast.

We asked people living in Ivory Coast to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Ivory Coast, it is important to pack clothing suitable for the hot and humid climate. Lightweight, breathable fabrics such as cotton and linen are ideal. It is also important to bring a good supply of sunscreen and insect repellent. Additionally, it is a good idea to bring a first aid kit, as well as any necessary medications. It is also important to bring a few items to make your new home feel more comfortable, such as pictures, books, and other personal items. Finally, it is important to bring a valid passport and any other necessary documents," commented one expat who made the move to Ivory Coast.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Ivory Coast?

We asked people in Ivory Coast if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"It is important to be respectful of local customs and traditions when visiting Ivory Coast. It is considered impolite to show too much skin in public, so it is best to dress modestly. It is also important to be aware of the local language and to avoid speaking loudly or using offensive language. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local religious beliefs and to avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics or religion. Finally, it is important to be respectful of the local culture and to avoid making assumptions about the people or their customs," said one expat in Ivory Coast.

"Not yet, but with my fractured French and slightly clueless personality, I'm sure I will," remarked one expat who made the move to Abidjan.

How are healthcare services Ivory Coast?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Ivory Coast, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Ivory Coast are provided by both public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is largely funded by the government and is available to all citizens. However, the quality of public healthcare is generally considered to be low, with limited access to medical supplies and equipment. Foreign residents are able to access the public healthcare system, but they may be required to pay for some services. Expats in Ivory Coast typically use private healthcare services, as they are more reliable and offer better quality care. However, some expats may use the public healthcare system if they are unable to afford private care," remarked one expat in Ivory Coast.

What are medical services in Ivory Coast like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Ivory Coast, they replied:

"Ivory Coast has a public health system that provides basic medical services to its citizens. The country also has a number of private hospitals and clinics that offer more advanced medical care. The quality of medical services in Ivory Coast varies depending on the location and the type of facility. Generally, the public health system is underfunded and lacks the resources to provide adequate care. Private hospitals and clinics tend to be better equipped and offer higher quality services. However, they are often expensive and out of reach for many people," commented one expat living in Ivory Coast.
