What do I need to know before moving to Laos?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Laos, they said:

"No advice. Depends on your style of life. I grew up in the mountains of Colorado in a cabin with no electricity, running water, and snowed in 3 months of the year," explained one expat living in Vientiane, Laos.

"Before moving to Laos, expats should be aware that the country is still developing and the infrastructure is not as advanced as in other countries. Expats should also be aware that the cost of living in Laos is relatively low, but the quality of goods and services may not be as high as in other countries. Additionally, expats should be aware that the climate in Laos is tropical and humid, and the rainy season runs from May to October. Expats should also be aware that the official language of Laos is Lao, although English is widely spoken in the cities. Finally, expats should be aware that the visa requirements for Laos are quite strict and that they should research the visa requirements before making the move," said one expat in Laos.

How do I find a place to live in Laos?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Laos can be a challenge, but there are a few options available. One option is to look for rental properties online, such as through websites like Lao Property Finder or Lao Real Estate. Additionally, you can look for rental properties in newspapers or through local real estate agents. You can also look for shared housing options, such as through websites like Lao Room Finder or Lao Home Share. Finally, you can also look for homestays or guesthouses, which are often available in rural areas," said one expat who made the move to Laos.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Laos?

"Expat homes and apartments in Laos tend to be modern and comfortable, with air conditioning, western-style bathrooms, and modern appliances. Many expats choose to live in larger cities such as Vientiane, where there are more amenities and services available. Expat homes and apartments in Laos often come with balconies or terraces, providing a great view of the city or countryside. Furnishings are typically modern and comfortable, with a mix of traditional Lao and western styles. Expats can also find a variety of housing options, from luxury apartments to more affordable options," said one expat in Laos.

What is the average cost of housing in Laos?

If you are thinking about moving to Laos, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Laos varies depending on the location and type of accommodation. Generally, the cost of renting a house or apartment in Laos is relatively affordable compared to other countries in the region. Prices for basic accommodation can start from as low as $100 per month, while more luxurious options can cost up to $1,000 per month," commented one expat who made the move to Laos.

Should I buy or rent a home in Laos?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Laos, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"Buying a home in Laos can be a great investment, as property prices are still relatively low. However, it is important to consider the cost of living in the area, as well as the availability of amenities and services. Renting a home in Laos can be a more cost-effective option, as it allows you to live in the area without the long-term commitment of buying a home. Additionally, renting can provide more flexibility if you are unsure of how long you will be staying in the area. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Laos should be based on your individual needs and preferences," remarked one expat who made the move to Laos.

What should I pack when moving to Laos?

We asked people living in Laos to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"1. Heavy socks, jackets, and sweaters 2. Hand tools: electric drill, electrical 3. M/C jacket, helmet boots, gloves," remarked one expat in Vientiane, Laos.

"When moving to Laos, it is important to pack items that will help you adjust to the climate and culture. Bring clothing that is lightweight and breathable, as well as items that will protect you from the sun. It is also important to bring items that will help you stay cool, such as a fan or air conditioning unit. Additionally, bring items that will help you stay connected to your home country, such as a laptop, phone, and internet access. Finally, make sure to bring any necessary medications and toiletries," said one expat in Laos.

We asked people in Laos if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

Refrain from taking photos of people without asking permission first. Additionally, dress modestly and avoid public displays of affection. It is also important to be aware of the local customs and traditions, and to be respectful of religious sites. Finally, be mindful of your language and avoid using offensive or derogatory terms," said one expat in Laos.

How are healthcare services Laos?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Laos, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Laos are provided by both public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is largely funded by the government and is available to all citizens of Laos. The quality of public healthcare varies depending on the region, but generally it is considered to be of a lower standard than in other countries. Foreign residents do have access to the public healthcare system, but the services are limited and the cost of treatment can be expensive. Expats in Laos often use the public healthcare system for basic medical needs, but they may also opt to use private healthcare services for more specialized treatments," stated one expat who made the move to Laos.

What are medical services in Laos like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Laos, they replied:

"Medical services in Laos are generally limited, with most of the country's medical facilities located in the capital city of Vientiane. The majority of medical care is provided by the government, with a few private clinics and hospitals available. The quality of care varies, with some facilities providing basic services while others offer more advanced treatments. In rural areas, access to medical care is often limited, and many people rely on traditional medicine for their health needs. In general, medical services in Laos are not up to the standards of other countries in the region," wrote one expat living in Laos.
