Digital Nomad Life in Afghanistan

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Afghanistan is not a popular destination for digital nomads. The most popular cities for digital nomads are usually in countries with more developed infrastructure and better access to technology, such as Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Digital nomads may be attracted to Afghanistan for its low cost of living and its unique culture. A digital nomad can live on a monthly budget of around $500 in Afghanistan. The culture of Afghanistan is a mix of traditional Islamic values and more modern influences. The country is known for its hospitality and its vibrant music and art scene. Foods popular in Afghanistan include kebabs, mantu (dumplings), and aushak (noodles with yogurt and meat). Afghan breads such as naan and tandoori are also popular.

How do I meet people in Afghanistan?

When we asked people living in Afghanistan about club and activities where newcomers can meet others, they responded:

"Expats living in Afghanistan can join several clubs and activities, such as the American Women of Kabul Community Club and the Afghan-American Football Club. Additionally, participating in local events and festivals, such as Kabul's International Gardens Festival and the Mihtarlam Festival, allows expats to mingle with the local population and make friends. Serving in a volunteer organization or teaching at a local school are also ways for expats to become part of the community. Expats can also meet people by attending weekly Sunday dinners hosted by the International Women’s Association of Kabul and joining the local events at Kabul-based restaurants. Additionally, social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have allowed expats to connect with each other and make new friends," said one expat who made the move to Afghanistan.

What is life like in Afghanistan?

When we asked people living in Afghanistan what life is like and how people spend their time, they said:

"Life for expats and digital nomads in Afghanistan can be difficult due to the security threats and instability that exists in the country. Despite this, there is a small but growing community of expats and digital nomads based in Afghanistan, particularly in the capital, Kabul. They typically stay in secure residential compounds and have access to basic amenities such as Wi-Fi, supermarkets and hospitals. Due to the security concerns, expats and digital nomads in Afghanistan generally have limited access to the outdoors, with areas close to the city being the safest. However, with a wealth of culture and an ever-growing tech start-up culture, many expats find that the positive experiences of living in Afghanistan outweigh the negatives," explained one person living in Afghanistan.

Where should I live in Afghanistan?

We asked digital nomads and expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Afghanistan can be a challenging process. However, one option is to use the official government website e-Tazkera to look for available housing. There are also numerous websites dedicated to Afghani classifieds which can provide helpful information on apartments and houses for rent in different parts of Afghanistan. Additionally, people may also wish to visit local real estate or property agents to get information on available space in certain neighborhoods. It is important to note that rental prices and availability can vary significantly depending on the location and type of housing," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Afghanistan.

What do I need to know before moving to Afghanistan?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Afghanistan, they said:

"Expatriates considering retirement in Afghanistan should first research the local culture, laws, and customs; learn the local language, especially Pashto and Dari; be aware of the security situation and understand the risks involved; visit Afghanistan to meet other expatriates and gain a better understanding of what life is like in the country; and familiarise themselves with the healthcare and pension systems. It is also important to understand that the cost of living in Afghanistan is very low, and that expatriates may need to bring medicines and other supplies with them. Finally, expatriates should be aware that Afghanistan is an Islamic country and that public displays of affection are considered haram and strictly prohibited," said one person in Afghanistan.

What do people find most challenging about the culture in Afghanistan?

"One of the most challenging aspects of the local culture that expats in Afghanistan find difficult to navigate is the complex religious and social customs. Since the country is mainly comprised of Muslim people, there is a large cultural divide between those who practice different faiths and those who adhere strictly to Islamic values. Expats must be aware of different cultural taboos and etiquette as locals believe it is extremely important to respect the cultural norms of their society. Additionally, some Afghan customs such as the custom of women wearing a head scarf and being accompanied by a male guardian when in public can often be confusing or intimidating for foreigners. Another difficult cultural challenge that expats face is the complex tribal and clan structures as these are often difficult to understand and can cause misunderstandings among locals and expats. Finally, the lack of reliable infrastructure and basic services such as electricity and plumbing can be a challenge for many expats used to the conveniences of a modern society," said one person in Afghanistan.

What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Afghanistan for a while?

"In order to reside in Afghanistan for an extended period of time, you would need to obtain a long-term visa from the Afghan Consulate. Depending on your nationality, the application process and requirements may vary. In addition, you would need to register with the local authorities in the area that you plan to live in to obtain a residency permit. Proof of a valid address would be required when submitting your application," said one expat in Afghanistan.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Afghanistan?

We asked people in Afghanistan if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:

"It is important to be mindful of cultural norms in Afghanistan, such as respecting Islamic dress codes. You should dress modestly, avoiding clothing that is tight or revealing. It is important to recognize and accept distinctions between genders; avoid physical contact with members of the opposite sex that you are not related to, and always request permission before taking photos. Show respect for elders; when addressing them, use the honorific title "Mister" or "Madam". Finally, it is important to refrain from making any jokes about Islam or joking about the situation in Afghanistan," remarked one member in Afghanistan.

What are healthcare services like in Afghanistan?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Afghanistan, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Afghanistan are provided by both public and private providers. The public healthcare system is largely funded by the government and is free for Afghan citizens. However, the quality of public healthcare is generally poor due to a lack of resources and infrastructure. Foreign residents do not have access to the public healthcare system, but there are some private healthcare providers that offer services to expats. Expats in Afghanistan typically use private healthcare providers, as the public system is not available to them," commented a person living in Afghanistan.
