Where should I live in Cambodia?

We asked digital nomads and expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One of the best ways to find a place to live in Cambodia is to use online resources such as websites like Expat.com, Cambodia Expat Network, and Cambodia Property. These websites provide listings of available properties, as well as information about the local rental market. Additionally, it is possible to find a place to live by asking around in the local community, as many people in Cambodia are willing to rent out their homes. Finally, it is also possible to find a place to live by contacting a real estate agent, who can help you find a suitable property," said one person in Cambodia.

It is also important to familiarize oneself with the local laws and regulations, as well as the visa requirements for long-term stays. Additionally, expats should consider the availability of healthcare and medical services, as well as the quality of the local infrastructure. Finally, expats should be aware of the cultural differences between their home country and Cambodia, and be prepared to adjust to a new way of life," remarked one member in Cambodia.

What do people find most challenging about the culture in Cambodia?

"Expats in Cambodia often find the language barrier to be one of the most challenging aspects of the local culture. Additionally, the country's hot and humid climate can be difficult to adjust to. Furthermore, the cultural norms and expectations can be difficult to understand, as they are often quite different from those of other countries. Additionally, the lack of reliable public transportation can be a challenge for expats who are not used to navigating the country on their own. Finally, the cost of living in Cambodia can be higher than in other countries, making it difficult for expats to find affordable housing and other necessities," said one expat who made the move to Cambodia.

"Language of cause & bribes that are paid to officials when you need to go through official channels," explained one foreigner living in Kampot, Cambodia.

What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Cambodia for a while?

"If you plan to stay in Cambodia for an extended period of time, you will need to obtain a valid visa. Depending on the length of your stay, you may need to apply for a long-term visa, such as a business visa, student visa, or work visa. You may also need to provide proof of residence, such as a valid passport, proof of employment, or proof of financial stability. Additionally, you may need to provide proof of health insurance and a valid return ticket," said one person in Cambodia.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Cambodia?

We asked people in Cambodia if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:

"It is important to be respectful of Cambodian culture and customs when visiting the country. It is considered rude to point with your finger, so it is best to gesture with your whole hand. It is also important to dress modestly, as showing too much skin is considered inappropriate. It is also important to be aware of the local customs and traditions, and to avoid touching people on the head or pointing your feet at them. Additionally, it is important to be respectful of religious sites and to avoid taking photos without permission. Finally, it is important to be aware of the local language and to avoid speaking loudly or using offensive language," explained one person living in Cambodia.

What are healthcare services like in Cambodia?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Cambodia, they replied:

"Cambodia has a public healthcare system that provides basic healthcare services to its citizens. The quality of public healthcare in Cambodia is generally considered to be low, with limited access to medical equipment and supplies. Foreign residents in Cambodia have access to the public healthcare system, but the quality of care is not as high as in other countries. Expats in Cambodia often use private healthcare services, which are more expensive but offer better quality care. Private healthcare services are available in major cities, such as Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, and are often used by expats who are not covered by public healthcare," said one digital nomad in Cambodia.

"Specifically, the International Clinics are preferred. CT Clinic can be good or not so good. My doctor here is Russian. Here, 4 years of college and a score of 50% on the final exam qualifies a Cambodian to become a doctor. Best to avoid of course," commented a person living in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

What are the pros and cons of living in Cambodia?

"Life in Cambodia is not always easy but in time you can learn to cope with the various problems that crop up and find an acceptable level of satisfaction. The occurrence of COVIC restrictions have added to the problem for everyone and have made family visits to my family in UK and my wife's family in Vietnam almost impossible but we have access to telephone and social media that has helped to keep in touch. The particular problems are that my mother and my mother-in-law are both very elderly and not in the best of health. In the event of serious illnesss or worse we have extremely difficult decisions to make," explained one expat living in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

"Expats and digital nomads often appreciate the low cost of living in Cambodia, as well as the friendly locals and the abundance of cultural attractions. They also enjoy the tropical climate and the variety of outdoor activities available. On the other hand, some expats and digital nomads may find the infrastructure and public transportation lacking, as well as the lack of reliable internet access. Additionally, the language barrier can be a challenge for some," said one digital nomad in Cambodia.
