What are healthcare services like in Turkmenistan?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Turkmenistan, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Turkmenistan are provided by both public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is largely funded by the government and is free for citizens of Turkmenistan. The quality of public healthcare is generally considered to be below average, with limited access to modern medical equipment and medicines. Foreign residents do not have access to the public healthcare system, and must rely on private healthcare services. Expats in Turkmenistan typically use private healthcare services, which are more expensive than public healthcare, but offer better quality care," said one digital nomad in Turkmenistan.

Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in Turkmenistan?

"Healthcare and health insurance in Turkmenistan can be expensive, especially for those who are not covered by the government's social health insurance system. Private health insurance is available, but it can be costly and may not cover all medical expenses. Additionally, the cost of medical services in Turkmenistan is generally higher than in other countries, and the quality of care may not be as good. As a result, many people in Turkmenistan are unable to access the healthcare they need due to the high cost," wrote one digital nomad living in Turkmenistan.

What are emergency services like in Turkmenistan?

When we asked about emergency services, members in Turkmenistan wrote:

"Emergency services in Turkmenistan are available to provide medical assistance in the event of an emergency. To call for an ambulance, you can dial the emergency number 112. The ambulance service is free of charge and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The ambulance service is staffed by trained medical personnel who are able to provide medical assistance and transport to the nearest hospital," explained one digital nomad living in Turkmenistan.

Will I need to travel to see a specialist?

"Ashgabat is the capital of Turkmenistan and is home to the largest selection of medical specialists in the country. Other cities with a good selection of medical specialists include Mary, Dashoguz, and Turkmenabat. Additionally, the Caspian Sea region of Turkmenistan is known for its excellent selection of medical specialists," said a member in Turkmenistan.

Are common prescription medications available in Turkmenistan?

"Yes, common prescription medications are available in Turkmenistan. Most medications are available through pharmacies, although some may require a prescription from a doctor. The availability of certain medications may vary depending on the region. In addition, some medications may be more expensive than in other countries due to import taxes," said one member in Turkmenistan.

Do you have anything more to add about local medical facilities in Turkmenistan?

"Medical facilities and medical care in Turkmenistan are generally of a good quality. The country has a well-developed healthcare system, with a wide range of medical services available. The government provides free healthcare to all citizens, and there are a number of private hospitals and clinics that offer high-quality medical care. The country also has a number of specialized medical centers, such as the National Center for Cardiology and the National Center for Oncology. In addition, there are a number of international medical centers in the country, providing access to advanced medical treatments," explained one digital nomad living in Turkmenistan.

As a foreigner living in Turkmenistan, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

"Yes, foreigners living in Turkmenistan have access to public healthcare. The quality of care varies depending on the region, but generally the public healthcare system is well-equipped and staffed with experienced professionals. The government provides free healthcare to all citizens, including foreigners, and there are a number of hospitals and clinics throughout the country. The public healthcare system is supplemented by a number of private clinics and hospitals, which offer more specialized care," said a member in Turkmenistan.

What have your experiences during the pandemic with the local healthcare system been like?

We asked expats in Turkmenistan if they have access to public healthcare in Turkmenistan. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"The pandemic has had a significant impact on the healthcare system in Turkmenistan. The government has implemented strict measures to contain the spread of the virus, including closing borders, suspending international flights, and introducing a nationwide quarantine. Healthcare workers have been working tirelessly to provide medical care to those affected by the virus, while also trying to prevent further spread. Despite the challenges, the healthcare system has been able to provide adequate care to those in need. The government has also provided financial support to healthcare workers and has implemented a number of initiatives to ensure that the healthcare system is able to cope with the pandemic," explained one person living in Turkmenistan.
