What are healthcare services like in Azerbaijan?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Azerbaijan, they replied:

"Azerbaijan offers a wide range of healthcare services, including primary care, specialist care, hospital care, and preventive care. The public healthcare system in Azerbaijan is generally of good quality, with a wide range of services available. Foreign residents have access to the public healthcare system, although they may need to pay for some services. Expats in Azerbaijan can use the public healthcare system, but they may need to pay for some services. In addition, there are private healthcare providers in Azerbaijan that offer more comprehensive services, although these services may be more expensive," wrote one digital nomad living in Azerbaijan.

What is the quality of medical care in Azerbaijan like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Azerbaijan, they replied:

"Azerbaijan has a well-developed healthcare system, providing a wide range of medical services. The country has a network of hospitals, clinics, and medical centers that offer a variety of treatments and services, including general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and dentistry. The country also has a number of specialized medical centers that provide specialized treatments such as oncology, cardiology, and neurology. In addition, Azerbaijan has a number of private medical facilities that offer a range of services, including cosmetic surgery, fertility treatments, and alternative medicine," remarked one member in Azerbaijan.

Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in Azerbaijan?

"Healthcare and health insurance in Azerbaijan can be expensive, depending on the type of coverage and services needed. Private health insurance plans are available, but they can be costly and may not cover all medical expenses. Public health insurance is available, but it is limited and may not cover all medical expenses. Additionally, the cost of medical services in Azerbaijan can be high, and many people may not be able to afford the necessary treatments," explained one person living in Azerbaijan.

What are emergency services like in Azerbaijan?

When we asked about emergency services, members in Azerbaijan wrote:

"In Azerbaijan, emergency services are available to provide medical assistance and other emergency services. To call for an ambulance, you can dial the emergency number 112. This number is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The ambulance will be dispatched to the location of the caller and medical assistance will be provided," said a member in Azerbaijan.

Will I need to travel to see a specialist?

"The capital city of Baku has the best selection of medical specialists in Azerbaijan, due to the larger population and more infrastructure. Additionally, several regions throughout the country, such as Ganja, Sumqayit, and Nakhchivan, each offer many highly qualified medical professionals. Other areas where medical specialists can be found include Qusar, Khizi, Guba, and Shamakhi," explained one digital nomad living in Azerbaijan.

Are common prescription medications available in Azerbaijan?

"Yes, common prescription medications are available in Azerbaijan. Pharmacies in Azerbaijan are well-stocked with a wide variety of medications, including both generic and brand-name drugs. Many of the medications available in Azerbaijan are imported from other countries, such as Turkey, India, and Russia. In addition, some medications are produced locally. It is important to note that some medications may require a prescription from a doctor in order to be purchased," commented a person living in Azerbaijan.

Do you have anything more to add about local medical facilities in Azerbaijan?

"Medical facilities and medical care in Azerbaijan are generally of a high quality. The country is well equipped with modern medical equipment, and many medical staff have been trained to a high degree. Furthermore, both public and private medical facilities are available to cater to the needs of residents and visitors. Azerbaijan also offers access to a range of specialized treatments and preventative care services. The provision of quality, evidence-based medical care is a priority of the government, and the country has adopted various policies to ensure the best possible healthcare for its citizens," explained one digital nomad living in Azerbaijan.

As a foreigner living in Azerbaijan, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

"Yes, foreigners living in Azerbaijan have access to public healthcare. The quality of care is generally good, with a wide range of services available. The country has a well-developed network of hospitals and clinics, and the staff are generally well-trained and experienced. The cost of healthcare is relatively low compared to other countries, making it an attractive option for those looking for affordable medical care," said one foreigner in Azerbaijan.

What have your experiences during the pandemic with the local healthcare system been like?

We asked expats in Azerbaijan if they have access to public healthcare in Azerbaijan. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"The pandemic has had a significant impact on the healthcare system in Azerbaijan. The government has implemented a number of measures to protect the population, including the introduction of a nationwide lockdown, the closure of schools and universities, and the suspension of public transport. The healthcare system has also been affected, with hospitals and clinics struggling to cope with the increased demand for medical services. The government has provided additional funding to the healthcare system to help it cope with the pandemic, and has also implemented a number of measures to ensure the safety of healthcare workers. Despite these efforts, the healthcare system in Azerbaijan has been overwhelmed by the pandemic, with many patients unable to access the care they need," said one member in Azerbaijan.
