Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in Botswana?
"Healthcare and health insurance in Botswana can be expensive, especially for those who are not covered by the government's health insurance scheme. Private health insurance is available, but it can be costly and may not cover all medical expenses. The cost of medical care in Botswana is generally higher than in other countries in the region, and the quality of care can vary significantly. Additionally, access to healthcare can be limited in rural areas, making it difficult for people to receive the care they need," said one foreigner in Botswana.

This number is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is free of charge. The ambulance service is provided by the Botswana Red Cross Society and is staffed by trained personnel. In addition to the ambulance service, the Botswana Red Cross Society also provides first aid and medical assistance," said one digital nomad in Botswana.

Do you have anything more to add about local medical facilities in Botswana?

The government has invested heavily in healthcare infrastructure, and the country has access to modern medical technology and equipment. In addition, the government provides free healthcare to all citizens, and there are a number of private healthcare providers that offer more specialized services. Overall, Botswana has a high standard of medical care and facilities," explained one expat living in Botswana.

The government provides free healthcare for all citizens and permanent residents, and there are also private healthcare facilities available. What have your experiences during the pandemic with the local healthcare system been like?
We asked expats in Botswana if they have access to public healthcare in Botswana. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"The pandemic has had a significant impact on Botswana's healthcare system. The government has implemented a number of measures to protect the public, including the closure of non-essential services, the suspension of elective surgeries, and the introduction of telemedicine services. Despite these measures, the healthcare system has been overwhelmed by the influx of patients seeking treatment for COVID-19. Many healthcare workers have been overworked and underpaid, leading to a shortage of medical personnel. Additionally, the lack of access to testing and treatment has been a major challenge, as the country has limited resources and a lack of medical supplies. Despite these challenges, the government has taken steps to ensure that the healthcare system is able to cope with the pandemic, including the introduction of a national health insurance scheme and the provision of additional funding for healthcare facilities," said one member in Botswana.
