What are healthcare services like in Mongolia?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Mongolia, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Mongolia are provided by both public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is funded by the government and is available to all citizens. The quality of public healthcare is generally considered to be good, with a focus on preventive care and primary care services. Foreign residents are able to access the public healthcare system, although they may need to pay for some services. Expats in Mongolia can use the public healthcare system, but they may need to pay for some services. In addition, many expats opt to purchase private health insurance to cover any additional costs," explained one expat living in Mongolia.

Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in Mongolia?

"Healthcare and health insurance in Mongolia can be expensive, especially for those who are not covered by the government's social health insurance system. Private health insurance is available, but it can be costly and may not cover all medical expenses. Additionally, the cost of medical care in Mongolia is generally higher than in other countries, and the quality of care can vary significantly. As a result, many people in Mongolia are unable to access the healthcare they need due to the cost," said one digital nomad in Mongolia.

What are emergency services like in Mongolia?

When we asked about emergency services, members in Mongolia wrote:

"Emergency services in Mongolia are provided by the Mongolian National Emergency Management Agency (MNEMA). In the event of an emergency, the public can call the MNEMA hotline at 103 to request an ambulance. The MNEMA hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The ambulance service is free of charge and is staffed by trained medical personnel. In addition to the ambulance service, the MNEMA also provides firefighting, search and rescue, and disaster relief services," explained one person living in Mongolia.

Will I need to travel to see a specialist?

"Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, is home to the largest selection of medical specialists in the country. Other cities with a good selection of medical specialists include Darkhan, Erdenet, and Choibalsan. Additionally, the provinces of Töv, Selenge, and Uvs have a wide range of medical specialists available," explained one digital nomad living in Mongolia.

Are common prescription medications available in Mongolia?

"Prescription medications are available in Mongolia, although the availability of certain medications may vary depending on the region. Many medications are imported from other countries, such as India, and are available in pharmacies and hospitals. In addition, some medications are produced locally in Mongolia. However, due to the limited resources available in Mongolia, the availability of certain medications may be limited," said one digital nomad in Mongolia.

Do you have anything more to add about local medical facilities in Mongolia?

"Mongolia has a wide range of medical facilities and medical care available to its citizens. The quality of care is generally good, with many hospitals and clinics offering modern medical equipment and experienced medical staff. The government has invested heavily in the healthcare system, and there are a number of initiatives in place to improve access to healthcare for all citizens. In addition, there are a number of international organizations that provide medical assistance to those in need. Overall, the quality of medical care in Mongolia is good and improving," said a member in Mongolia.

As a foreigner living in Mongolia, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

"Yes, foreigners living in Mongolia have access to public healthcare. The quality of care varies depending on the region, but generally the public healthcare system is considered to be of a good standard. The public healthcare system is free for Mongolian citizens, but foreigners may be required to pay a fee for services. The public healthcare system is mainly focused on primary care, with limited access to specialist care. However, there are a number of private hospitals and clinics in the country that offer a higher standard of care," wrote one digital nomad living in Mongolia.

What have your experiences during the pandemic with the local healthcare system been like?

We asked expats in Mongolia if they have access to public healthcare in Mongolia. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"The pandemic has had a significant impact on Mongolia's healthcare system. The country has seen a dramatic increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, and the healthcare system has been strained to its limits. Hospitals have been overwhelmed with patients, and there has been a shortage of medical supplies and personnel. The government has implemented strict measures to contain the spread of the virus, including travel restrictions, social distancing, and the closure of schools and businesses. Despite these measures, the number of cases continues to rise, and the healthcare system is struggling to cope. The government has also implemented a nationwide vaccination program, but the rollout has been slow due to a lack of resources. As a result, many people are still unable to access the healthcare they need," said one digital nomad in Mongolia.
