What are healthcare services like in Senegal?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Senegal, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Senegal are provided by both public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is managed by the Ministry of Health and Social Action and is funded by the government. The public healthcare system provides basic medical services, including primary care, preventive care, and emergency services. The quality of public healthcare in Senegal is generally considered to be adequate, although there are some areas where the quality of care is lacking. Foreign residents in Senegal have access to the public healthcare system, although they may need to pay for some services. Expats in Senegal typically use the public healthcare system for basic medical services, such as primary care and preventive care. However, they may opt to use private healthcare services for more specialized medical care," wrote one digital nomad living in Senegal.

Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in Senegal?

"Healthcare and health insurance in Senegal can be expensive, especially for those who are not covered by the government's health insurance program. Private health insurance is available, but it can be costly and may not cover all medical expenses. Additionally, the cost of medical care in Senegal is often higher than in other countries, making it difficult for many people to access the care they need," explained one digital nomad living in Senegal.

What are emergency services like in Senegal?

When we asked about emergency services, members in Senegal wrote:

"Emergency services in Senegal are generally reliable and available. To call for an ambulance, you can dial the national emergency number, 117, or contact the local fire department or police station. Additionally, many hospitals have their own emergency services that can be contacted directly," said one member in Senegal.

Will I need to travel to see a specialist?

"The cities of Dakar and Thiès are home to some of the best medical specialists in Senegal. Additionally, the coastal city of Saint-Louis is known for its excellent selection of medical professionals. Other areas of the country that are known for their medical specialists include Ziguinchor, Kaolack, and Mbour," explained one expat living in Senegal.

Are common prescription medications available in Senegal?

"Yes, common prescription medications are available in Senegal. Most medications are available in pharmacies, although some may require a prescription from a doctor. Do you have anything more to add about local medical facilities in Senegal?

"Senegal has a well-developed healthcare system, with a network of public and private hospitals and clinics providing medical care. The quality of medical care in Senegal is generally good, with a range of services available, including primary care, specialist care, and emergency services. The country has a number of well-trained doctors and nurses, and access to modern medical equipment and technology. In addition, the government has invested in improving access to healthcare in rural areas, and has implemented a number of initiatives to improve the quality of medical care," said a member in Senegal.

As a foreigner living in Senegal, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

"Yes, foreigners living in Senegal have access to public healthcare. The quality of care varies depending on the region, but generally the public healthcare system is considered to be of good quality. The public healthcare system is free for all citizens and residents, and there are a number of public hospitals and clinics throughout the country. The public healthcare system is supplemented by a number of private healthcare providers, which offer more specialized services," explained one person living in Senegal.

What have your experiences during the pandemic with the local healthcare system been like?

We asked expats in Senegal if they have access to public healthcare in Senegal. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"The pandemic has had a significant impact on the healthcare system in Senegal. The government has implemented a number of measures to help contain the spread of the virus, including the closure of schools, the suspension of public gatherings, and the introduction of a nationwide curfew. Despite these measures, the healthcare system has been overwhelmed by the number of cases, leading to long wait times for medical care and a shortage of medical supplies. In addition, the pandemic has caused a disruption in the supply chain, making it difficult for hospitals to obtain the necessary medical supplies. Despite these challenges, the government has taken steps to ensure that the healthcare system is able to cope with the pandemic, including the deployment of additional medical personnel and the provision of additional funding for medical supplies," said one member in Senegal.
