What are healthcare services like in Ivory Coast?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Ivory Coast, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Ivory Coast are provided by both public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is largely funded by the government and is available to all citizens. However, the quality of public healthcare is generally considered to be low, with limited access to medical supplies and equipment. Foreign residents are able to access the public healthcare system, but they may be required to pay for some services. Expats in Ivory Coast typically use private healthcare services, as they are more reliable and offer better quality care. However, some expats may use the public healthcare system if they are unable to afford private care," explained one digital nomad living in Ivory Coast.

What is the quality of medical care in Ivory Coast like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Ivory Coast, they replied:

"Ivory Coast has a public health system that provides basic medical services to its citizens. The country also has a number of private hospitals and clinics that offer more advanced medical care. The quality of medical services in Ivory Coast varies depending on the location and the type of facility. Generally, the public health system is underfunded and lacks the resources to provide adequate care. Private hospitals and clinics tend to be better equipped and offer higher quality services. However, they are often expensive and out of reach for many people," said a member in Ivory Coast.

Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in Ivory Coast?

"Healthcare and health insurance in Ivory Coast can be expensive, especially for those who are not covered by the government's health insurance program. Private health insurance is available, but it can be costly and may not cover all medical expenses. Additionally, the quality of healthcare in Ivory Coast is not always up to the standards of other countries, and medical facilities may not have the latest technology or equipment. As a result, many people in Ivory Coast rely on traditional medicine and home remedies to treat their illnesses," said a member in Ivory Coast.

What are emergency services like in Ivory Coast?

When we asked about emergency services, members in Ivory Coast wrote:

"Emergency services in Ivory Coast are generally available in major cities and towns, but may be limited in rural areas. To call for an ambulance, you can dial the national emergency number, 112, or contact the local fire department or police station. In some areas, you may also be able to call a private ambulance service," explained one expat living in Ivory Coast.

Will I need to travel to see a specialist?

"The cities of Abidjan and Bouaké are known for having a wide selection of medical specialists. Other areas in Ivory Coast that have a good selection of medical specialists include Yamoussoukro, San Pedro, and Daloa. Additionally, the coastal cities of Grand-Bassam and Assinie-Mafia are also known for having a good selection of medical specialists," said one digital nomad in Ivory Coast.

Are common prescription medications available in Ivory Coast?

"Prescription medications are available in Ivory Coast, although the availability of certain medications may vary depending on the region. Generally, most common medications used to treat common illnesses such as colds, flu, and infections can be found in pharmacies throughout the country. However, some medications may be more difficult to find, such as those used to treat chronic conditions or rare diseases. Additionally, some medications may be more expensive in Ivory Coast than in other countries," explained one expat living in Ivory Coast.

Do you have anything more to add about local medical facilities in Ivory Coast?

"The medical facilities and medical care in Ivory Coast are generally of a good standard. The country has a number of well-equipped hospitals and clinics, staffed by qualified medical professionals. The government has invested heavily in the health sector, and there are a number of initiatives in place to improve access to healthcare for all citizens. However, there are still some areas of the country where access to medical care is limited, and the quality of care can be variable," said one foreigner in Ivory Coast.

As a foreigner living in Ivory Coast, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

"Yes, foreigners living in Ivory Coast have access to public healthcare. The quality of care varies depending on the region, but generally the public healthcare system is considered to be of good quality. The public healthcare system is free for all citizens and residents, and there are a number of public hospitals and clinics throughout the country. The public healthcare system is supplemented by a number of private healthcare providers, which offer more specialized services," explained one expat living in Ivory Coast.

What have your experiences during the pandemic with the local healthcare system been like?

We asked expats in Ivory Coast if they have access to public healthcare in Ivory Coast. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"The pandemic has had a significant impact on Ivory Coast's healthcare system. The country has seen a surge in cases of COVID-19, leading to an increased demand for medical services. The government has responded by increasing the number of beds in hospitals and providing additional medical personnel. However, the healthcare system is still struggling to cope with the increased demand, leading to long wait times and overcrowding in hospitals. Additionally, the lack of access to testing and treatment has been a major challenge, as many people are unable to access the necessary medical care. Despite these challenges, the government has taken steps to ensure that the healthcare system is able to cope with the pandemic, such as providing additional funding and resources to healthcare facilities," wrote one digital nomad living in Ivory Coast.
