What are healthcare services like in Nepal?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Nepal, they replied:

"Nepal has a public healthcare system that provides basic healthcare services to its citizens. The quality of public healthcare in Nepal is generally considered to be low, with limited access to specialized care and medicines. Foreign residents in Nepal have access to the public healthcare system, but the quality of care is not as good as in other countries. Expats in Nepal typically use private healthcare services, which are more expensive but offer better quality care. Private healthcare services in Nepal are provided by both local and international providers, and are generally considered to be of a higher quality than the public healthcare system," explained one person living in Nepal.

What is the quality of medical care in Nepal like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Nepal, they replied:

"Medical services in Nepal are generally limited, with most of the population relying on traditional medicine and home remedies. The country has a few hospitals and clinics, but they are often overcrowded and lack the necessary resources and equipment. The government has made efforts to improve access to healthcare, but the quality of care remains low due to a lack of trained medical personnel and inadequate funding. In rural areas, access to medical services is even more limited, with many people having to travel long distances to receive treatment. Despite these challenges, the Nepalese government is working to improve access to healthcare and increase the quality of medical services," explained one digital nomad living in Nepal.

Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in Nepal?

"Healthcare and health insurance in Nepal can be expensive, especially for those who are not covered by government-subsidized health insurance. Private health insurance plans are available, but they can be costly and may not cover all medical expenses. Additionally, many medical facilities in Nepal are not up to international standards, and the cost of medical care can be high. Furthermore, the cost of medications can be expensive, and many people in Nepal cannot afford them," explained one digital nomad living in Nepal.

What are emergency services like in Nepal?

When we asked about emergency services, members in Nepal wrote:

"Emergency services in Nepal are limited and vary in quality depending on the region. In urban areas, there are some private ambulance services that can be called for medical emergencies. In rural areas, however, access to emergency services is more limited and may require a call to the local police station or health post. To call for an ambulance, one can dial the emergency number 100 from any phone in Nepal," explained one expat living in Nepal.

Will I need to travel to see a specialist?

"Kathmandu is the largest city in Nepal and is home to some of the best medical specialists in the country. The city is home to a number of renowned hospitals and medical centers, such as the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, the Nepal Medical College, and the Patan Hospital. Additionally, the city is home to a number of specialized medical centers, such as the Nepal Eye Hospital, the Nepal Cancer Hospital, and the Nepal Heart Hospital. Other cities in Nepal with a good selection of medical specialists include Pokhara, Biratnagar, and Birgunj. Additionally, the towns of Dhulikhel and Chitwan are known for their excellent medical facilities," said one member in Nepal.

Are common prescription medications available in Nepal?

"Prescription medications are available in Nepal, although the availability of certain medications may vary depending on the region. Many pharmacies in Nepal carry a wide range of generic and branded medications, including antibiotics, painkillers, and other common medications. However, some medications may not be available in Nepal due to restrictions on importation or other factors. It is important to consult with a doctor or pharmacist to determine which medications are available in Nepal," explained one expat living in Nepal.

Do you have anything more to add about local medical facilities in Nepal?

"Medical facilities and medical care in Nepal vary greatly depending on the region. In urban areas, medical care is generally of a higher quality than in rural areas, where access to medical facilities and resources is often limited. In general, medical care in Nepal is adequate, but there are still many areas where access to quality medical care is limited. The government is working to improve access to medical care in rural areas, but progress is slow," said a member in Nepal.

As a foreigner living in Nepal, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

"Yes, foreigners living in Nepal have access to public healthcare. The quality of care varies depending on the region, but generally the public healthcare system is adequate for basic medical needs. The government provides free healthcare for citizens, and foreigners may be able to access some services at a reduced cost. However, it is recommended that foreigners living in Nepal purchase private health insurance to ensure access to quality healthcare," explained one digital nomad living in Nepal.

What have your experiences during the pandemic with the local healthcare system been like?

We asked expats in Nepal if they have access to public healthcare in Nepal. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"The pandemic has had a significant impact on the healthcare system in Nepal. The country has seen a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases, leading to an increased demand for medical services. This has put a strain on the already limited resources of the healthcare system. Hospitals have been overwhelmed with patients, leading to long wait times and limited access to medical care. The government has implemented various measures to help alleviate the situation, such as providing free testing and treatment for COVID-19 patients. However, the lack of resources and personnel has made it difficult to provide adequate care to all those in need," said a member in Nepal.
