Summary: The cost of living in Belize is generally considered to be quite affordable. A nice 1 bedroom apartment can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,000 per month in US Dollars, while a nice 2 bedroom apartment can cost anywhere from $800 to $1,500 per month in US Dollars. The cost of dinner at a moderately priced restaurant can range from $10 to $20 per person in US Dollars.
Is the cost of living in Belize high?
We asked people how much they someone comfortably live on in Belize, they wrote:
"That is such a leading answer. The QRP package requires that you bring 2000 us dollars into the country per month. For those not taking the QRP package, and taking up plain residency (takes a year to do) , there are people living on a lot less than 2000 US and living comfortably," explained one expat.
"We have no house payment since our home is paid for. We are doing very well on about 3,000 U.S. per month, though we could get by for much less," said one person in Hopkins Village.

Will I save money living in Belize?
"We have done very well living just on our social security monthly payments. We were able to purchase an automobile to facilitate shopping in neighboring village and cities," said one expat in Hopkins Village.
"It has met our expectations and exceeded them, we live a good life, eat well, and are very happy," wrote a person living in Belize City.
What is the average cost of housing in Belize?
If you are thinking about moving to Belize, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:
"The cost of housing in Belize varies depending on the location, size and condition of the home. The average cost for a small, one-bedroom house or apartment in a city can range from $550 to $800 per month. A mid-size home may cost between $800-$1500, while luxury homes and large estates on the beachfront may cost upwards of $3000 or more," explained one expat living in Belize.
"MUCH LOWER! Property taxes are around 30 dollars a year!!! Car insurance is less than 150 a year! WOW!," said one expat in Belize City.
"Housing cost is about 50% less if you are a owner builder. Avg for land and house is $80k US and the ROI after three years is about triple that," wrote a person living in Corozal.

What are typical rental prices for expats in Belize?
"Rental prices will vary based on the size (how many bedrooms, bathrooms, amenities, etc), the location (near the sea, river, inland), and whether it is high or low season. How the home is furnished may have a bearing on the rent also. In the Hopkins area rentals can be found for just about any budget," wrote an expat living in Hopkins.
"In Belize, the average rental price for a nice 1 bedroom apartment is typically a few hundred U.S. dollars per month, while a nice 2 bedroom apartment can cost a few hundred to a few thousand U.S. dollars per month, depending on the location and quality of the apartment," said an expat in Belize.
"When renting in Belize, 500 USD a month for a 1/2 Bedroom and 1000 USD for a month 2/3 Bedroom. ," commented one expat living in San Ignacio, Belize.
"$1,000 per month for a couple in search of a 1-2 bedroom and $2,000 for a family needing a 3-4 bedroom," wrote one expat.
What appliances are typically included in a rental?
We asked foreigners in Belize what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:
"Typically the kitchen is fully setup, the appliances are included, washer and dryer are included," said one expat living in San Pedro.
"In Belize, most rental properties generally come equipped with basic appliances such as a refrigerator, stove, and washer and dryer. Additionally, many homes may also include air conditioning, ceiling fans, and even a hot water heater. Other amenities like dishwashers and extra ovens are sometimes available in higher-end properties," mentioned one expat in Belize.
"In Belize, most rentals come furnished since it would not be expedient for a renter to purchase furniture, large appliances, and kitchen items.," commented one expat who moved to Hopkins, Belize.
