"One of the best ways to find a place to live in Uganda is to search online for rental listings. There are many websites that list available properties in Uganda, such as Jumia House, Property24, and Private Property. Additionally, you can search for rental listings on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. You can also contact local real estate agents who can help you find a suitable property. Additionally, you can ask friends and family who live in Uganda for recommendations. Finally, you can also look for rental listings in local newspapers and magazines," remarked one member in Uganda.

"Expat homes and apartments in Uganda tend to be modern and comfortable, with amenities such as air conditioning, internet access, and satellite television. Many expats choose to live in gated communities, which offer additional security and access to amenities such as swimming pools, gyms, and tennis courts. Expat homes and apartments in Uganda are typically spacious and well-furnished, with plenty of room for entertaining guests," explained one expat living in Uganda.
What is the average cost of housing in Uganda?
If you are thinking about moving to Uganda, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:
"The cost of housing in Uganda varies greatly depending on the location and type of housing. Generally, housing in urban areas tends to be more expensive than in rural areas. Prices for rental properties range from low-cost, basic housing to more expensive, modern apartments. In addition, the cost of purchasing a home in Uganda can be quite high, with prices ranging from a few hundred thousand to several million Ugandan shillings," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Uganda.
Should I buy or rent a home in Uganda?
If you have not spent a lot of time in Uganda, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:
"Buying a home in Uganda can be a great investment, as property values are likely to appreciate over time. However, renting a home in Uganda can be a more cost-effective option in the short-term, as it allows you to avoid the upfront costs associated with buying a home. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Uganda should be based on your individual financial situation and long-term goals," explained one expat living in Uganda.
What do I need to know when buying property in Uganda?
When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Uganda, they said:
"1. It is important to research the area you are looking to buy in, as well as the local laws and regulations that may affect the purchase. 2. It is important to have a lawyer review any contracts or documents related to the purchase, to ensure that your rights and interests are protected. 3. It is important to understand the tax implications of buying property in Uganda, as well as any other fees or costs associated with the purchase. 4. It is important to understand the local market and the current trends in the area, as this can affect the value of the property. 5. It is important to understand the process of transferring ownership of the property, as well as any restrictions or limitations that may be in place. 6. It is important to understand the local infrastructure and services available in the area, as this can affect the value of the property. 7. It is important to understand the local customs and culture, as this can affect the purchase process," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Uganda.
Are foreigners allowed to own property in Uganda?
When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Uganda, they said...
"Yes, foreigners are allowed to own property in Uganda. The Land Act of 1998 allows foreign investors to own land in Uganda, provided they obtain the necessary permits from the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development. Foreigners are also allowed to lease land for up to 99 years. However, they are not allowed to own land in certain areas, such as national parks and military zones. Additionally, foreign investors must register their property with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau," wrote one expat who made the move to Uganda.
What appliances are typically included in a rental?
We asked foreigners in Uganda what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:
"In Uganda, rental properties typically include a refrigerator, stove, oven, and washing machine. Other common appliances may include a microwave, dishwasher, and air conditioning unit. Depending on the property, additional amenities such as a water heater, water filter, and security system may also be included," said one foreigner living in Uganda.
