We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:
"Found the area by talking with friends and using realtor as well as length of commute. Also, by calibre of schools recommended by School Choice," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Morristown.
"There are several different methods to find a place to live in the United States. One option is to do an online search on real estate websites such as Zillow, Trulia, and Realtor.com to find potential listings in the area you are interested in. You can also contact local real estate agencies and inquire about listings they have available. You can also ask your friends and family if they know of any available rentals. Lastly, you can explore "For Rent" signs advertising rentals in your desired area," explained one person living in United States.
"This is a small island so I started in a apartment behind someone's house for first year... loved it . Location was great, price reasonable and it was month to month," said one expat in Key West.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in the United States?
"Expat homes and apartments in the United States typically present an array of options to cater to different tastes and requirements. Depending on the budget, these homes and apartments come in a variety of sizes and styles, from one-bedroom apartments to whole houses. In larger cities, one can find amenities such as gyms, pools, balconies and terraces, security systems and more. Expats are also drawn to more modern apartments with air-conditioning, stainless steel kitchens, and the latest electronics. Expats are also known to rent homes with gardens and patios for a more suburban lifestyle. Furthermore, apartments in suburban areas often have luxurious features such as well-furnished bedrooms and kitchens, laundry facilities and even game rooms. Whatever prospective expats choose, they can be sure to find a feeling of home here in the United States," explained one person living in United States.
"Initially we rented an apartment, this can be typically hard with children, although a great short term mesure, whilst you suss out which area to live in. Be careful not to sign a years lease, just in case you want to move out sooner. The get out clases can be somewhat high. Make sure you check the apartment or rental home out thoroughly first, write down any minor details/faults as well as large. Overall a good way to find out about the area's that surround you. The company Archstone has my thumbs up," said one expat in Fort Lauderdale.
"Large detached. Had to get used to the unfenced gardens. Youngest child was confined to the deck," remarked one member in Morristown.

Should I buy or rent a home in the United States?
If you have not spent a lot of time in the United States, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:
"When deciding whether to buy or rent a home in the United States, there are a few important considerations to keep in mind. Firstly, it's important to examine your financial situation to determine which option is most suited to your resources. Typically, if you can afford it, buying a home is the recommended path, as you can build equity and your monthly payments may be lower than those of a rental. However, if your location or job situation is likely to change in the near future, it may be better to rent, as it can provide more flexibility. Additionally, if you're not ready to commit to the longer-term responsibility of home ownership, renting may be the ideal option. Ultimately, the decision should be tailored to your unique circumstances," said one expat who made the move to United States.
What do I need to know when buying property in the United States?
When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in the United States, they said:
"Before buying property in the United States, it is important to research the state's laws regarding real estate transactions and different types of ownership. It is important to get a thorough understanding of the zoning regulations for the area you are buying, as well as checking for any potential legal restrictions that may affect any renovation or building work you plan to do. It is also important to check for any possible environmental issues that may be associated with the property, such as flooding or soil contamination. It is important to ensure that any contract you enter into is legally sound and that it includes all the pertinent information, such as the purchase price, inclusions, and conditions. Lastly, it is essential to obtain proper legal advice prior to signing any contract, to ensure all of your legal rights are being safeguarded," explained one person living in United States.
Are foreigners allowed to own property in the United States?
When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in the United States, they said...
"Yes, foreigners are allowed to own property in the United States. Generally, foreign nationals are able to purchase residential and commercial real estate in the United States, provided they have the necessary funds and meet certain requirements. Foreigners may purchase property through a limited liability company (LLC) or other legal entity, or in their own name. However, they may be subject to certain restrictions, such as obtaining a visa or other authorization from the U.S. government. Additionally, foreign nationals may be subject to certain taxes and fees when purchasing property in the United States," said one in United States.
What appliances are typically included in a rental?
We asked foreigners in the United States what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:
"Renting a home in the United States typically includes appliances such as a refrigerator, oven or stove, dishwasher, garbage disposal, washer, and dryer. Some homes may also come with additional features such as a microwave, air conditioning, or if the property is located in a warm climate, a pool or hot tub," explained one person living in United States.
"We nearly always have stove, fridge, and AC. But is there a generator? A cistern? Any alternative form of energy? These are important questions in an area where there are frequent power outages even when there is no storm," said one expat in Christiansted.
