What do I need to know before moving to Dubai?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Dubai, they said:

"Before moving to Dubai, expats should be aware of the local laws and customs. It is important to familiarize yourself with the dress code, which is generally conservative. Expats should also be aware of the cost of living, which is generally higher than in other parts of the world. Additionally, expats should research the job market and the availability of housing in the area. Finally, it is important to understand the visa requirements for entering and staying in the UAE," said one expat in Dubai.

How do I find a place to live in Dubai?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"The best way to find a place to live in Dubai is to research online. There are many websites that offer listings of apartments, villas, and other housing options in the area. Additionally, you can contact a real estate agent who specializes in the area to help you find the perfect place to live. You can also look for housing options in newspapers and magazines, or ask friends and family who live in the area for recommendations," commented one expat who made the move to Dubai.

"Expat homes and apartments in Dubai are typically luxurious and modern, with high-end amenities such as swimming pools, gyms, and spas. Many of the apartments and villas come with stunning views of the city skyline, while some offer direct access to the beach. Expats can also find a variety of housing options, from high-rise apartments to villas in gated communities. Most expat homes and apartments come with modern appliances and furniture, as well as access to a variety of services such as housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance," commented one expat who made the move to Dubai.

What is the average cost of housing in Dubai?

If you are thinking about moving to Dubai, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Dubai can vary greatly depending on the area and type of property. Generally, the average cost of renting an apartment in Dubai is around AED 80,000 to AED 120,000 per year, while the average cost of buying a property in Dubai is around AED 1,500,000," said one expat in Dubai.

Should I buy or rent a home in Dubai?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Dubai, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"Buying a home in Dubai can be a great investment, as the city is known for its strong real estate market. However, it is important to consider the cost of living in the city, as well as the availability of rental properties. Renting a home in Dubai can be a great option for those who are looking for a more flexible living situation, as it allows for more freedom to move around and explore the city. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Dubai should be based on individual needs and preferences," said one expat in Dubai.

What should I pack when moving to Dubai?

We asked people living in Dubai to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Dubai, it is important to pack items that will help you adjust to the climate and culture. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing that will keep you cool in the hot, humid climate. Bring a few items of formal clothing for special occasions. Make sure to bring a good pair of sunglasses and a hat to protect you from the sun. Bring a few items of swimwear for the many beaches and pools in the area. Pack a few items of traditional clothing to show respect for the local culture. Bring a few books or magazines to keep you entertained during your travels. Finally, make sure to bring any necessary documents, such as your passport and visa," said one expat in Dubai.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Dubai?

We asked people in Dubai if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"Do not park our car outside the yellow lines I got a parking ticket at 7:30 in the morning 200 aed," said one expat who made the move to Dubai.

"It is important to be respectful of local customs and traditions when visiting Dubai. It is important to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. It is also important to avoid public displays of affection, as this is considered inappropriate in the UAE. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local laws and regulations, and to avoid engaging in activities that are illegal in the UAE, such as drinking alcohol in public or using drugs. Finally, it is important to be respectful of the local culture and to avoid making derogatory comments about the UAE or its people," explained one expat living in Dubai, the UAE.

"The medical care in the UAE and in Dubai was mostly really good. We had a range of private and government hospitals and clinics available to us. The staff were international, as were the hospitals. There were a range of well known American, Canadian and English hospitals," offered one expat living in Dubai.

"Healthcare services in Dubai, are known for their high-quality standards and modern facilities, attracting both local residents and medical tourists. The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) oversees the healthcare sector, ensuring that both public and private hospitals and clinics adhere to strict regulations and guidelines. Public healthcare services are available to UAE nationals and expatriates with valid health insurance, while private healthcare services cater to those who prefer more personalized care and shorter waiting times. Dubai boasts a wide range of healthcare facilities, including general hospitals, specialized clinics, and medical centers that offer various services such as primary care, dental care, maternity care, and mental health services. Many healthcare professionals in Dubai are internationally trained, ensuring that patients receive top-notch care and expertise. Additionally, the city is home to several world-class medical institutions, such as the Dubai Healthcare City, which houses numerous clinics, hospitals, and research centers. In terms of emergency care, Dubai has a well-developed ambulance system and emergency departments in hospitals that are equipped to handle various medical emergencies. "Medical services in Dubai, are known for their high-quality healthcare facilities, well-equipped hospitals, and skilled medical professionals. Both public and private healthcare sectors are available, with the private sector being more popular among expatriates due to shorter waiting times and a wider range of services. Dubai has a strong focus on medical tourism, attracting patients from around the world for various treatments and procedures. Health insurance is mandatory for all residents, ensuring access to medical services for everyone. The Dubai Health Authority oversees the healthcare system, ensuring that all facilities meet international standards and provide top-notch care to patients," commented one expat living in Dubai.
