What do I need to know before moving to Sharjah?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Sharjah, they said:

"Before moving to Sharjah, expats should be aware that the city is a dry city, meaning that the sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited. Additionally, Sharjah is a conservative city, so visitors should be mindful of local customs and dress modestly. Expats should also be aware that Sharjah is a car-dependent city, so having a car is essential for getting around. Finally, expats should be aware that the cost of living in Sharjah is relatively low compared to other cities in the UAE," said one expat in Sharjah.

How do I find a place to live in Sharjah?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"The best way to find a place to live in Sharjah is to search online for rental listings. There are many websites that offer listings of apartments, villas, and other types of housing in the area. Additionally, you can contact a local real estate agent who can help you find a suitable place to live. You can also look for classified ads in local newspapers and magazines, or ask friends and family for recommendations," said one expat in Sharjah.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Sharjah?

"Expat homes and apartments in Sharjah are typically modern and spacious, with large windows and balconies that offer stunning views of the city. Many of the apartments come with amenities such as air conditioning, swimming pools, gyms, and saunas. The apartments are usually located in secure, gated communities with 24-hour security, making them a safe and comfortable place to live. The city also offers a wide range of shopping, dining, and entertainment options, making it an ideal place for expats to live," explained one expat living in Sharjah, the UAE.

What is the average cost of housing in Sharjah?

If you are thinking about moving to Sharjah, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Sharjah varies depending on the area and type of property. Generally, the average cost of renting an apartment in Sharjah is around AED 3,000 to AED 8,000 per month, while the average cost of buying a property in Sharjah is around AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 per square foot," said one expat who made the move to Sharjah.

"When deciding whether to buy or rent a home in Sharjah, it is important to consider your budget, lifestyle, and long-term plans. Buying a home in Sharjah can be a great investment, as property values tend to appreciate over time. However, it is important to factor in the cost of maintenance and repairs, as well as the cost of a down payment. Renting a home in Sharjah can be a more affordable option, and it can provide more flexibility if you are not sure how long you will be living in the area. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Sharjah should be based on your individual needs and preferences," replied a member in Sharjah.

What should I pack when moving to Sharjah?

We asked people living in Sharjah to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Sharjah, it is important to pack items that will help you adjust to the climate and culture. Pack light, breathable clothing that will keep you cool in the hot, humid climate. Bring a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. Bring a scarf or shawl to cover your head and shoulders when visiting religious sites. Pack comfortable shoes for walking and exploring the city. Bring a few items of your own culture to remind you of home. Don't forget to bring your passport and other important documents. Finally, make sure to bring a good supply of sunscreen and insect repellent," said one expat in Sharjah.
