What do I need to know before moving to Ambergris Caye?
When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Ambergris Caye, they said:
"Ambergris Caye is a popular destination for expats due to its beautiful beaches, warm climate, and friendly locals. Before moving there, it's important to know that English is the official language, making it easier for English-speaking expats to communicate and integrate. The cost of living can be high, especially in areas popular with tourists and expats, so it's crucial to budget accordingly. The local currency is the Belize Dollar, but US dollars are widely accepted. Healthcare facilities on the island are limited, so for serious medical conditions, you may need to travel to Belize City or even outside the country. It's recommended to have comprehensive health insurance that covers medical evacuation. The island has a relaxed, laid-back lifestyle which can be a significant change if you're used to a fast-paced city life. The weather is tropical, meaning it's hot and humid year-round, with a rainy season from June to November. While Ambergris Caye is generally safe, like any place, it has some crime. It's advised to take standard precautions to protect your personal safety and belongings. Getting around the island is typically done by golf cart, bicycle, or on foot, as there are very few cars. Importing a vehicle can be expensive and complicated due to import duties and regulations. Finally, while Belize has a relatively straightforward process for obtaining residency, it's essential to understand the legal requirements and procedures before making the move. It's recommended to consult with a local attorney or immigration expert," replied a member in Ambergris Caye.

However, if the market is unstable or property values are falling, renting might be a safer option. A light rain jacket or umbrella would be useful for the occasional rain shower. In terms of toiletries, pack enough to last you until you can find a local store where you can purchase more. This includes items like toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and any prescription medications you may need. If you plan on cooking, you might want to bring some of your favorite spices or condiments that may not be readily available in Belize. Remember to pack important documents such as your passport, driver's license, and any necessary immigration paperwork. Lastly, bring along any electronics you'll need, like your phone, laptop, or tablet, along with their chargers. Do not expect things to happen quickly or on time, as Belize operates on 'island time' and things often take longer than expected.
