What do I need to know before moving to Guangzhou?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Guangzhou, they said:

"It is important for expats to research and become familiar with the language and culture of Guangzhou before relocating. Additionally, expats should research visa options, whether they need to obtain a visa before arriving, or if they need to apply for one after being in the city. Expats should also research housing options to determine the best area to live that fits their accommodation needs. Furthermore, expats should be aware of health risks and medical insurance requirements for living in China. Additionally, Guangzhou has a high level of air pollution, so expats should take precautions to protect their health and well-being," commented one expat who made the move to Guangzhou, China.

How do I find a place to live in Guangzhou?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One way to find a place to live in Guangzhou is by searching through online rental marketplaces such as 58.com. This website allows you to search for apartments according to the area, the size of the rental, and the budget you have in mind. Additionally, many expats have had success finding rentals through Wechat groups dedicated to sharing apartment listings. Finally, you can always turn to local real estate agents who are specialized in helping foreigners find housing in Guangzhou," remarked one expat who made the move to Guangzhou, China.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Guangzhou?

"Expat homes and apartments in Guangzhou typically feature modern interiors with large open living spaces. The apartments come equipped with sophisticated amenities such as air conditioning, high speed internet, smart TVs, and international power sockets. Furnished properties often come with stylish furniture pieces, washing machines and dryers, and refrigerators. Most also offer private balconies where you can enjoy stunning views of the city skyline. Expats in Guangzhou can also find well-maintained luxury developments in bustling areas with impressive facilities such as fitness centers and swimming pools," commented one expat who made the move to Guangzhou, China.

What is the average cost of housing in Guangzhou?

If you are thinking about moving to Guangzhou, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Guangzhou can vary significantly depending on the quality of the accommodation and the location. Generally speaking, renting a one-bedroom apartment in a city center would likely cost around 7,000 - 14,000 RMB per month. An apartment further away from the center in a more residential neighborhood could cost around 4,000 - 8,000 RMB per month," remarked one expat in Guangzhou, China, China.

Should I buy or rent a home in Guangzhou?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Guangzhou, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"If you are planning on staying in Guangzhou for an extended period of time, buying a home is often a better financial decision than renting. Owning a home will provide you the stability of not having to worry about sudden rent increases, and you can also make money on your investment if you decide to sell it in the future. Additionally, buying a home in Guangzhou gives you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the local area and culture and create deeper roots in the community. On the other hand, renting may be a better option if you are not yet sure on how long you plan to live in Guangzhou, since it can be costlier to break a long term contract than a short term rental," replied a member in Guangzhou, China.

What should I pack when moving to Guangzhou?

We asked people living in Guangzhou to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Guangzhou, it is important to remember to pack comfortable, lightweight clothing in natural easy-breathable fabrics due to hot, humid temperatures in summer. It is also advisable to bring an umbrella and a raincoat due to the frequent heavy rain and extended monsoons. Shoes that can be easily removed for entering houses and temples is recommended. In terms of healthcare, it is important to bring prescription medication and over the counter medicine, as well as a first aid kit. Depending on the length of stay, bringing cooking utensils, furniture, and bedding may be necessary. Lastly, travellers may want to bring a guide book for navigating around the city," explained one expat living in Guangzhou, China, China.

We asked people in Guangzhou if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"It is important to be respectful of traditional Chinese customs and culture when visiting Guangzhou. One should avoid speaking too loudly in public, as this is considered to be rude and inconsiderate of others around. Additionally, it should be noted that when using public transportation, it is necessary to maintain silence and be respectful of those around you. Furthermore, when conversing with local people, be mindful to avoid making jokes or comments regarding preconceptions or opinions that could be seen as offensive, particularly regarding matters of China's history and politics. Finally, it is advisable to take off ones shoes before entering a Chinese home and to be aware of any food etiquette rules when dining with locals," explained one expat living in Guangzhou, China, China.
