What do I need to know before moving to Manizales?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Manizales, they said:

"Manizales is a city located in the coffee-growing region of the country, known for its stunning landscapes, friendly locals, and rich culture. Before moving to Manizales, expats should know that the city has a temperate climate, with temperatures ranging from 14 to 22 degrees Celsius throughout the year. The cost of living is relatively low compared to other Colombian cities, but it's important to have a stable income or savings. Spanish is the official language in Manizales, so it would be beneficial to learn the language or at least basic phrases before moving. The city is known for its safety compared to other Colombian cities, but like any place, it's important to take precautions and be aware of your surroundings. Manizales has a slower pace of life compared to larger cities like Bogota or Medellin, which can be a welcome change for those looking for a more relaxed lifestyle. The city is also known for its vibrant cultural scene, with numerous festivals, art exhibitions, and music events taking place throughout the year. Public transportation in Manizales is reliable and affordable, with a network of buses and cable cars serving the city. However, the city's hilly terrain can make getting around on foot challenging. Healthcare in Manizales is of a high standard, with several modern hospitals and clinics in the city. However, it's recommended to have health insurance to cover any medical expenses. The cuisine in Manizales is diverse and delicious, with a focus on local ingredients and traditional Colombian dishes. The city is also known for its coffee, which is considered some of the best in the world. Finally, it's important to understand the local customs and traditions in Manizales. Colombians are known for their hospitality and friendliness, and it's common to greet people with a handshake or a hug. Punctuality is not always strictly observed, and it's common for social events to start later than scheduled," said one expat who made the move to Manizales.

How do I find a place to live in Manizales?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Manizales involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget and the type of accommodation you're looking for. This could range from a shared apartment to a private house. Next, you should research the different neighborhoods in Manizales to find one that suits your lifestyle and preferences. Some popular neighborhoods include El Cable, Palermo, and La Estrella. Once you have a clear idea of what you're looking for, you can start your search. There are several online platforms where you can find listings for rentals in Manizales, such as Airbnb, Booking.com, and local real estate websites like FincaRaiz and MetroCuadrado. You can also contact local real estate agencies directly. They can provide you with listings that match your criteria and arrange viewings. Another option is to look for listings in local newspapers or on bulletin boards in community centers or supermarkets. When you find a place you're interested in, make sure to visit it in person before making any commitments. Check the condition of the property, ask about any additional costs such as utilities or maintenance fees, and try to meet the landlord or property manager if possible. Finally, once you've found a place you're happy with, you'll need to sign a lease agreement. Make sure to read it carefully and understand all the terms before signing. If you're not fluent in Spanish, you might want to get help from a local friend or hire a translator to ensure you understand everything. Remember, finding a place to live can take some time, so it's a good idea to start your search well in advance of your move," replied a member in Manizales.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Manizales?

"A typical expat home or apartment in Manizales, is often located in a safe and secure neighborhood, with easy access to local amenities such as shops, restaurants, and public transportation. These homes are usually modern and well-maintained, featuring spacious living areas, fully equipped kitchens, and comfortable bedrooms. Many apartments offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains and cityscape. Some homes may come with additional amenities like a private garden, a swimming pool, or a rooftop terrace. The interiors are often tastefully decorated, with a blend of contemporary and traditional Colombian elements. Despite the high quality of these homes, the cost of living in Manizales is generally lower compared to other major cities, making it an attractive destination for expats," said one expat in Manizales.

What is the average cost of housing in Manizales?

If you are thinking about moving to Manizales, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The average cost of housing in Manizales can vary greatly depending on the location and size of the property. For a one-bedroom apartment in the city center, the monthly rent can be quite affordable. If you're looking to buy, the price per square meter for an apartment in the city center is also relatively inexpensive compared to other major cities. However, prices can increase significantly for larger properties or those in more desirable locations. It's also worth noting that utility costs and condominium fees are typically additional expenses to consider," explained one expat living in Manizales, Colombia.

Should I buy or rent a home in Manizales?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Manizales, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"The decision to buy or rent a home in Manizales, largely depends on your personal circumstances, financial situation, and long-term plans. If you plan to stay in Manizales for a long period, buying a home could be a good investment. Owning a home allows you to build equity over time and could provide financial stability in the future. On the other hand, if you're unsure about your long-term plans or if your job requires you to move frequently, renting might be a better option. Renting offers more flexibility and less financial commitment. It also allows you to avoid the costs and responsibilities that come with home ownership, such as maintenance and repairs. It's also important to consider the real estate market in Manizales. If property prices are high and continue to rise, buying a home could be a good investment. However, if prices are low or stagnant, renting might be more cost-effective. Lastly, consider your financial situation. Buying a home requires a significant upfront cost, including a down payment and closing costs. If you don't have enough savings, renting might be a more feasible option. However, if you can afford the upfront costs and the ongoing mortgage payments, buying a home could be a good long-term investment. In conclusion, the decision to buy or rent a home in Manizales, Colombia, depends on your personal circumstances, financial situation, and long-term plans. It's important to carefully consider all these factors before making a decision," remarked one expat in Manizales, Colombia.

What should I pack when moving to Manizales?

We asked people living in Manizales to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Manizales, it's important to pack lightweight clothing due to the city's warm climate. Include items like shorts, t-shirts, and sandals, but also pack some long-sleeved shirts and pants for cooler evenings. A rain jacket or umbrella is essential as Manizales experiences frequent rainfall. Don't forget to pack your swimsuit for the city's hot springs and a hat and sunglasses for sun protection. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring the city's hilly terrain. Pack all necessary toiletries, including sunscreen, as they can be expensive to buy locally. Also, bring any prescription medications you need, along with a copy of your prescription. Remember to pack a power adapter for your electronics, as Colombia uses a different plug type than many other countries. Bring a Spanish-English dictionary or phrasebook to help with communication, as English is not widely spoken in Manizales. Lastly, pack important documents like your passport, driver's license, and any necessary visas or work permits. It's also a good idea to have copies of these documents in case they get lost or stolen," replied a member in Manizales.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Manizales?

We asked people in Manizales if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"In Manizales, it's important to avoid discussing topics such as drugs, violence, and politics, as these are sensitive subjects due to the country's history. Colombians are very proud of their country and culture, so any negative comments or stereotypes can be seen as disrespectful. It's also considered rude to arrive on time for social events. Colombians often arrive late, so arriving on time can be seen as being too eager or impatient. However, for business meetings, punctuality is appreciated. Avoid wearing revealing clothing, especially in religious places. Colombians are generally conservative and modest in their dress, so it's best to follow suit. Don't refuse food or drink when offered, as this can be seen as a rejection of Colombian hospitality. It's also customary to say "Buen provecho" (enjoy your meal) before starting to eat. Avoid speaking loudly or drawing attention to yourself in public places. Colombians value politeness and discretion, so it's best to keep a low profile. Don't forget to tip in restaurants. While it's not mandatory, it's customary to leave a 10% tip for good service. Avoid using your finger to point at people or things, as this is considered rude. Instead, use your whole hand to gesture. Finally, don't assume everyone in Manizales speaks English. While many Colombians do speak English, it's best to learn a few basic phrases in Spanish to show respect for the local culture," replied a member in Manizales.
