Before moving to Tamarindo, expats should be aware that the cost of living is higher than in other parts of Costa Rica. Additionally, the local language is Spanish, so it is important to brush up on your language skills before arriving. Tamarindo is a great place to live, but it is important to be aware of the local laws and customs before making the move. Finally, it is important to research the best areas to live in Tamarindo, as some areas may be more suitable for expats than others," said one expat in Tamarindo.
How do I find a place to live in Tamarindo?

"Tamarindo is a popular destination for tourists and expats alike, and there are many options for finding a place to live. One of the best ways to find a place to live in Tamarindo is to search online for rental listings. There are many websites that specialize in rental listings for Tamarindo, such as Tamarindo Rentals, Tamarindo Real Estate, and Tamarindo Vacation Rentals. Additionally, there are many local real estate agents and property management companies that can help you find a place to live in Tamarindo. You can also look for rental listings in local newspapers and on bulletin boards in the area. Finally, you can also ask around in the local community for recommendations on places to rent," explained one expat living in Tamarindo, Costa Rica.
"On one visit, we took a side trip to Costa Rica to explore the beaches of Guanacaste. When we drove into Tamarindo, it felt a California beach town with a nice vibe. Over the next couple of years, we took a few trips to Playa Flamingo and Tamarindo to further explore the area and to look at condos for sale. We bought an ocean view condo in Tamarindo a couple of years before we retired, and then moved there full time after retiring in May 2013 (age 61-62). We liked the beach and the availability of a variety of restaurants and stores in Tamarindo, and easy walking access in town," said one expat in Tamarindo.

Tamarindo is a popular destination for expats, so there are plenty of options available to suit any budget," remarked one expat who made the move to Tamarindo.
What is the average cost of housing in Tamarindo?
If you are thinking about moving to Tamarindo, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:
"The cost of housing in Tamarindo can vary greatly depending on the type of accommodation and location. Generally, the average cost of a one-bedroom apartment in the city center is around $800 per month, while a two-bedroom apartment can cost up to $1,200 per month. Prices for larger homes and villas can range from $1,500 to $3,000 per month," explained one expat living in Tamarindo, Costa Rica.
"It depends on how close you want to be to the water. Are you willing to live in the surrounding area like Huacus or Villareal? It can be anywhere from $600 to thousands," said one expat in Tamarindo.
Should I buy or rent a home in Tamarindo?
If you have not spent a lot of time in Tamarindo, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:
"Buying a home in Tamarindo can be a great investment, as the area is known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant culture. However, it is important to consider the cost of living in the area, as well as the cost of purchasing a home. Renting a home in Tamarindo can be a great option for those who are looking for a more flexible living situation, as it allows for more freedom to explore the area without the commitment of a long-term purchase. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Tamarindo should be based on individual needs and preferences," replied a member in Tamarindo.
What should I pack when moving to Tamarindo?
We asked people living in Tamarindo to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:
"When moving to Tamarindo, it is important to pack items that will help you adjust to the tropical climate. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing such as shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses. Bring a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. Bring comfortable shoes for walking and exploring the area. Don't forget to pack a swimsuit and beach towel for the many beaches in the area. Bring a raincoat and umbrella for the occasional rain showers. Finally, bring any necessary medications and toiletries," said one expat in Tamarindo.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Tamarindo?
We asked people in Tamarindo if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:
"It is important to be respectful of local customs when visiting Tamarindo. It is important to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. It is also important to be aware of the local language and to avoid speaking loudly or using offensive language. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local customs regarding public displays of affection, as some cultures may be more conservative than others. Finally, it is important to be respectful of the local wildlife and to avoid disturbing or harassing animals," commented one expat who made the move to Tamarindo.

How are healthcare services Tamarindo?
When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Tamarindo, they replied:
"National health care may not provide a sufficient safety net - it may require a long wait for medical procedures. Private health care is recommended, but coverage for "pre-existing conditions" is generally not available except through national health care," wrote one expat living in Tamarindo.
"Tamarindo offers a variety of healthcare services to its residents and visitors. The town has several private clinics and hospitals that provide general medical care, as well as specialized services such as dentistry, optometry, and dermatology. Additionally, there are several pharmacies in the area that offer prescription medications and over-the-counter remedies. For more serious medical issues, Tamarindo is close to larger cities with more advanced medical facilities," commented one expat living in Tamarindo.
What are medical services in Tamarindo like?
When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Tamarindo, they replied:
"Tamarindo offers a variety of medical services for both locals and visitors. The town has several private clinics and hospitals that provide a range of medical services, including general practice, emergency care, and specialist care. Many of the clinics and hospitals are staffed by bilingual doctors and nurses, making it easy for visitors to communicate their needs. Additionally, Tamarindo has several pharmacies that offer a wide selection of medications and medical supplies," offered one expat living in Tamarindo.
"The caja is randomly assigned and not really a great value for what you get, private care is better and expat insurance isn't inexpensive. I do better to have my home health insurance and pay cash for services in CR however the providers here are excellent," wrote one expat living in Tamarindo.
