When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to St. Michael, they said:

"Before moving to St. Michael, expats should know that the official language is English, but Bajan, a local dialect, is also widely spoken. The cost of living is relatively high compared to other Caribbean islands, especially for housing and imported goods. The currency used is the Barbadian dollar, which is pegged to the US dollar. Expats should be aware that the climate is tropical, with a wet season from June to November and a dry season from December to May. The healthcare system in Barbados is of a high standard, with both public and private facilities available. However, it is recommended to have comprehensive health insurance. Driving is on the left-hand side of the road in Barbados, and an international driving permit is required to drive. Public transportation is reliable and affordable, with buses, minibuses, and route taxis available. Barbados has a relatively low crime rate, but petty crime like theft can occur, so it's important to take standard precautions. The island is also prone to hurricanes, so expats should familiarize themselves with local emergency procedures. The Barbadian culture is a blend of African, Indian, Irish, Creole, and British influences, and locals are known for their friendliness and hospitality. The island has a vibrant nightlife, with numerous bars, restaurants, and clubs, particularly in the St. Lawrence Gap area. Expats should also be aware that Barbados has strict laws against drug use and possession, and penalties can be severe. Lastly, it's important to note that Barbados has a slower pace of life compared to many Western countries, and the concept of 'island time' is very much a reality," remarked one expat who made the move to St. Michael.

"A typical expat home in St. Michael, is often a spacious, well-furnished apartment or house with modern amenities. These homes usually have a tropical aesthetic, with large windows that let in plenty of natural light and offer stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. They often feature open floor plans, with living areas that flow seamlessly into dining spaces and kitchens. The kitchens are typically equipped with modern appliances and ample storage space. The bedrooms are usually large and airy, with en-suite bathrooms and walk-in closets. Many homes also have private outdoor spaces, such as balconies or patios, where residents can enjoy the warm Barbadian weather. Some properties may also have a private pool or access to a communal pool. These homes are often located in secure, gated communities that offer a range of amenities, such as fitness centers, tennis courts, and golf courses. They are typically close to the beach, as well as to shops, restaurants, and other conveniences. Despite their proximity to these amenities, these homes often offer a sense of tranquility and privacy, making them ideal for expats seeking a relaxed lifestyle in Barbados. In terms of decor, many expat homes in St. Michael blend traditional Caribbean elements with contemporary design. For a standard three-bedroom house in a residential area, the price can range from moderately affordable to quite expensive. Luxury properties, particularly those with ocean views or in sought-after neighborhoods, can be significantly more costly. It's also worth noting that rental prices can also vary, with premium rates for properties in prime locations or with high-end amenities. Therefore, it's recommended to thoroughly research and perhaps seek local real estate advice when looking for housing in St. Michael, Barbados," remarked one expat who made the move to St. Michael.

Should I buy or rent a home in St. Michael?

If you have not spent a lot of time in St. Michael, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"The decision to buy or rent a home in St. Michael depends on several factors. If you plan to stay in Barbados for a long period, buying a home could be a good investment. Owning a property allows you to build equity over time and could provide a sense of stability and permanence. However, buying a home also comes with responsibilities such as maintenance, repairs, and property taxes. It also requires a significant upfront investment, including a down payment, closing costs, and moving expenses. On the other hand, renting a home in St. Michael, Barbados offers more flexibility. If you're not sure about your long-term plans or if you prefer not to deal with the responsibilities of homeownership, renting could be a better option. Renting allows you to move easily if your circumstances change, and it often comes with fewer upfront costs. In addition, the real estate market conditions in St. Michael, Barbados can also influence your decision. If the market is favorable for buyers, it might be a good time to buy. But if it's a seller's market, you might get more value from renting. Lastly, your personal financial situation is a crucial factor. You need to consider your income, savings, credit score, and other financial commitments. If you have a stable income, enough savings for a down payment, and a good credit score, buying a home could be a viable option. But if you're not financially ready, renting might be more feasible. In conclusion, the decision to buy or rent a home in St. Michael, Barbados depends on your long-term plans, the real estate market conditions, and your personal financial situation. It's important to weigh all these factors before making a decision," said one expat in St. Michael.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in St. Michael?

We asked people in St. Michael if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"In St. Michael, it is considered disrespectful to dress inappropriately in public places. Beachwear should be limited to the beach and not worn in town or other public areas. It's also important to respect the local customs and traditions. For instance, it's considered rude to interrupt or join a conversation without being invited. Barbadians value punctuality, so it's considered impolite to be late for appointments or meetings. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics and religion unless you are very familiar with the person you are talking to. It's also considered impolite to raise your voice or display aggressive behavior in public. Barbadians are generally calm and polite, and they appreciate the same in return. When dining, it's customary to use utensils and not your hands, unless the food is traditionally eaten by hand. Finally, it's important to remember that Barbadians are proud of their island and culture. Avoid making negative comments about the country or comparing it unfavorably to other places," replied a member in St. Michael.
