What do I need to know before moving to Batam?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Batam, they said:

"It can be difficult for a new expat, but I would recommend driving around and looking at several houses and complexes before making a decision, so you get an idea of what to expect," explained one expat living in Batam, Indonesia.

"Before moving to Batam, expats should be aware that the official language is Indonesian, so it is important to learn some basic phrases before arriving. Additionally, expats should research the cost of living in Batam, as it is generally lower than other parts of Indonesia. It is also important to be aware of the local customs and culture, as well as the local laws and regulations. Finally, expats should make sure to obtain the necessary visas and permits before moving to Batam," said one expat in Batam.

How do I find a place to live in Batam?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One of the best ways to find a place to live in Batam is to search online for rental listings. There are many websites that offer listings for apartments, houses, and other types of accommodation in Batam. Additionally, you can also search for rental listings on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, you can also ask around in the local community for recommendations on places to rent. Finally, you can also contact local real estate agents who can help you find a suitable place to live in Batam," said one expat in Batam.

"I looked around and used local housing agents for my first house, which I overpaid on significantly. The next house was a much better deal, though still had to pay 1 year in advance," remarked one expat who made the move to Batam.

If you have not spent a lot of time in Batam, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"Buying a home in Batam can be a great investment, as the city is growing rapidly and property values are increasing. However, it is important to consider the cost of living in Batam, as well as the availability of rental properties. Renting a home in Batam can be a great option for those who are not ready to commit to buying a home, as it allows for more flexibility and can be more cost-effective in the short-term. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Batam should be based on individual needs and preferences," said one expat in Batam.

What should I pack when moving to Batam?

We asked people living in Batam to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Batam, it is important to pack items that will help you adjust to the climate and culture. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing that is appropriate for the hot and humid climate. Bring a few items of clothing that are suitable for more formal occasions, such as a dinner or a business meeting. Bring a few items of clothing that are suitable for more casual occasions, such as a day at the beach or a night out. Pack a few items of clothing that are suitable for religious occasions, such as a visit to a mosque. Bring a few items of clothing that are suitable for outdoor activities, such as hiking or swimming. Pack a few items of clothing that are suitable for indoor activities, such as a movie night or a board game. Bring a few items of clothing that are suitable for the rainy season, such as a raincoat and rain boots. Pack a few items of clothing that are suitable for the dry season, such as a sun hat and sunglasses. Bring a few items of clothing that are suitable for the cooler evenings, such as a light jacket or a sweater. Pack a few items of clothing that are suitable for the hot days, such as shorts and t-shirts. Additionally, bring any necessary items for your daily routine, such as toiletries, medications, and personal items," remarked one expat in Batam, Indonesia.

"My favorite deodorant, an extra pair of shoes (I've got big feet), a decent pizza I packed pretty light," said one expat in Batam.

We asked people in Batam if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"It is important to be mindful of cultural norms when visiting Batam. It is considered rude to point with your index finger, so it is best to gesture with your whole hand. It is also important to dress modestly, as showing too much skin is considered inappropriate. Additionally, it is important to be respectful of religious customs, such as not eating pork in public or entering a mosque without permission. Finally, it is important to be aware of the local language and customs, and to be respectful of the local culture," replied a member in Batam.

How are healthcare services Batam?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Batam, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Batam, are a mix of public and private facilities, catering to the needs of both locals and tourists. The public healthcare system consists of several government-run hospitals and clinics, which provide basic medical services at affordable rates. These facilities are often crowded, and patients may experience long waiting times. In addition to public hospitals, there are numerous private hospitals and clinics in Batam, offering a higher standard of care and more specialized services. These private facilities are generally better equipped and staffed with well-trained medical professionals, including specialists in various fields. However, the cost of treatment at private hospitals can be significantly higher than at public facilities. Pharmacies are widely available throughout Batam, and most medications can be purchased over the counter without a prescription. However, it is essential to ensure that the medication is genuine and not counterfeit. Emergency medical services are available in Batam, but response times can be slow due to traffic congestion and limited resources. In case of a serious medical emergency, it may be necessary to seek treatment in nearby Singapore, which has a more advanced healthcare system. Overall, healthcare services in Batam are adequate for minor illnesses and injuries, but those with serious medical conditions or requiring specialized care may need to seek treatment outside the city. It is also essential for visitors to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses and evacuation, as healthcare costs can be high, especially in private facilities," said one expat living in Batam, Indonesia.

What are medical services in Batam like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Batam, they replied:

"Medical services in Batam, are relatively limited compared to larger cities in the country. The island has a few public and private hospitals, as well as clinics and pharmacies. Public hospitals tend to be crowded and may not have the most advanced equipment or facilities. Private hospitals and clinics generally offer better quality care, but at a higher cost. Many expatriates and tourists prefer to travel to Singapore for more advanced medical treatments and procedures, as it is just a short ferry ride away. It is essential to have comprehensive health insurance while in Batam, as medical costs can be high, especially for foreigners," said one expat living in Batam, Indonesia.
