What do I need to know before moving to Orchard Road?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Orchard Road, they said:

"Orchard Road in Singapore is known for its shopping, dining, and entertainment options, making it a vibrant and bustling area to live in. Before moving, expats should be aware that the cost of living can be quite high, especially when it comes to housing. Apartments and condos in this area are typically upscale and come with a hefty price tag. Public transportation is readily available, with the Orchard MRT station providing easy access to other parts of the city. However, owning a car can be expensive due to high taxes and fees. English is widely spoken in Singapore, but it can be beneficial to learn some basic phrases in Mandarin or Malay. The climate is tropical, meaning it's hot and humid year-round, with frequent rain showers. Singapore has strict laws and regulations, including penalties for littering, jaywalking, and chewing gum in public places. It's important to familiarize yourself with these rules to avoid fines or other penalties. Healthcare in Singapore is of a high standard, but it can be expensive. It's recommended to have comprehensive health insurance. The food scene in Orchard Road is diverse, with a mix of high-end restaurants and affordable hawker centres. Lastly, Singapore's education system is one of the best in the world. There are several international schools around Orchard Road, but securing a spot can be competitive, so it's advisable to start the application process early," replied a member in Orchard Road.

How do I find a place to live in Orchard Road?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Orchard Road involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget. The cost of living in Orchard Road is quite high compared to other parts of Singapore due to its prime location. Next, decide on the type of accommodation you want. Options range from condominiums, serviced apartments, to landed properties. Once you have a clear idea of what you're looking for, start your search. You can use online property portals like PropertyGuru, 99.co, and SRX Property. These websites allow you to filter your search based on location, property type, price range, and other factors. Alternatively, you can engage a real estate agent to help you in your search. They have extensive knowledge of the property market and can provide you with options that fit your criteria. When you find a potential place, arrange for a viewing. This will give you a better idea of the property's condition, its surroundings, and whether it suits your needs. If you're satisfied with the property, you can proceed to negotiate the lease terms. Make sure to read the contract thoroughly and understand all the terms and conditions before signing. Lastly, once everything is in order, you can move into your new home in Orchard Road. Remember, finding a place to live can take time, so it's important to start your search early," remarked one expat in Orchard Road, Singapore.

Should I buy or rent a home in Orchard Road?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Orchard Road, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

If you have the financial means and plan to stay in Singapore for a long time, buying a home could be a good investment, as it allows you to build equity and potentially benefit from property appreciation. Additionally, owning a home provides stability and the freedom to customize your living space. What should I pack when moving to Orchard Road?

We asked people living in Orchard Road to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Orchard Road, you should pack lightweight and breathable clothing due to the tropical climate. Include a good mix of casual and formal wear, as Singaporeans dress smartly for work and social events. Don't forget to pack a good pair of walking shoes for exploring the city, and sandals for the beach. Rain gear is also essential as Singapore experiences frequent rain showers, so pack a compact umbrella and a lightweight raincoat. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are also necessary to protect yourself from the intense sun. If you're planning to work, bring all necessary documents, including your passport, work visa, and any other identification. Also, pack any prescription medications you take regularly, along with a copy of the prescription. For your new home, consider packing some personal items to make it feel more comfortable and familiar. However, keep in mind that Singapore apartments are often smaller than Western ones, so avoid packing large items. Electronics are expensive in Singapore, so it's a good idea to bring your own, but remember to pack a power adapter as Singapore uses Type G plugs. Lastly, pack toiletries to last the first few weeks, as well as any specific brands you can't live without, as they may be more expensive or hard to find in Singapore," said one expat who made the move to Orchard Road.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Orchard Road?

We asked people in Orchard Road if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"Orchard Road in Singapore is a cosmopolitan area, but it's important to respect local customs and traditions. Avoid littering as Singapore is known for its strict cleanliness laws and heavy fines. Chewing gum is also banned in Singapore, so refrain from doing so. When using public transportation or escalators, always stand on the left and walk on the right. In terms of dining etiquette, never stick your chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice as it's considered bad luck. Also, if you're invited to someone's home, always remove your shoes before entering. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon in Singapore, so it's best to avoid excessive touching or hugging in public. It's also important to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. Lastly, Singapore is a multicultural city with a diverse range of religions and beliefs. Always show respect for these differences and avoid making insensitive comments or jokes about race, religion, or nationality," explained one expat living in Orchard Road, Singapore.
