What do I need to know before moving to River Valley?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to River Valley, they said:

"River Valley is a popular residential area in Singapore, known for its high-end condominiums and close proximity to the city center. It's a cosmopolitan area with a mix of locals and expats, making it a vibrant and diverse community. Before moving to River Valley, it's important to know that the cost of living is quite high. The area is known for its luxury apartments and condos, and the prices reflect this. However, the quality of life and the amenities available often justify the cost. The area is well-served by public transportation, with several bus routes and the nearby Orchard MRT station. However, traffic can be heavy during peak hours, so it's worth considering your commute when choosing a place to live. River Valley is home to a number of international schools, making it a popular choice for families with children. The schools are known for their high standards of education and wide range of extracurricular activities. The area is also known for its vibrant nightlife, with a wide range of bars, restaurants, and clubs. There are also plenty of shopping options, from high-end boutiques to local markets. Despite its urban location, River Valley also offers plenty of green spaces. The nearby Fort Canning Park is a popular spot for picnics and outdoor activities. English is widely spoken in River Valley, as it is throughout Singapore, so language is unlikely to be a barrier. However, it can be helpful to learn some basic phrases in Mandarin or Malay, the other official languages of Singapore. Healthcare in Singapore is of a high standard, and there are several medical facilities in and around River Valley. However, it's important to have comprehensive health insurance, as medical treatment can be expensive. Finally, it's worth noting that Singapore has strict laws and penalties, including for things that might be considered minor offenses in other countries. For example, littering, jaywalking, and chewing gum are all punishable offenses. It's important to familiarize yourself with the local laws to avoid any potential issues," replied a member in River Valley.

The bathrooms are usually modern and luxurious, often featuring a bathtub and a separate shower area. Many of these condominiums offer a range of facilities such as a swimming pool, gym, barbecue pits, and children's playground. Some even have tennis courts and function rooms. The location of these homes is also a major draw for expats. River Valley is centrally located, close to the Orchard Road shopping district, the Central Business District, and a variety of dining and entertainment options. It is also well-served by public transportation, making it easy for residents to get around the city. Should I buy or rent a home in River Valley?

If you have not spent a lot of time in River Valley, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"The decision to buy or rent a home in River Valley depends on your personal circumstances, financial situation, and long-term plans. If you plan to stay in the area for a long time and have the financial means to afford a down payment and monthly mortgage payments, buying a home could be a good investment. Owning a property in River Valley can provide stability, potential for appreciation in value, and the opportunity to build equity. On the other hand, if you are unsure about your long-term plans or prefer flexibility, renting might be a better option. Renting a home in River Valley allows you to avoid the upfront costs associated with buying a property, such as the down payment and stamp duty. Additionally, renting provides the flexibility to move more easily if your circumstances change or if you decide to explore a different neighborhood in Singapore. It is essential to carefully consider your financial situation, lifestyle preferences, and long-term goals before making a decision. Consulting with a real estate agent or financial advisor can also provide valuable insights and guidance in making the right choice for your situation," remarked one expat in River Valley, Singapore.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in River Valley?

We asked people in River Valley if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"In River Valley, it's important to respect the diverse cultures and religions. Avoid making insensitive comments about race, religion, or nationality, as Singapore is a multicultural society. When visiting religious sites, dress modestly and follow the rules of the place. For instance, in mosques, women are expected to cover their heads, and in temples, shoes are often not allowed. Avoid littering as Singapore has strict laws against it. Chewing gum is also banned in the country, so refrain from bringing it into Singapore. When using public transport, do not eat or drink. It's also polite to offer your seat to the elderly, pregnant women, or those with disabilities. In Singapore, it's considered rude to point with your foot or to touch someone's head, as the head is considered sacred. When dining, wait to be told where to sit, as there may be a seating arrangement. Also, if you're using chopsticks, don't stick them upright in your bowl, as this is considered bad luck. Lastly, always ask for permission before taking photos of people or private property," commented one expat who made the move to River Valley.
