"Nairobi is a vibrant and diverse city, and expats should be prepared for a unique cultural experience. It is important to research the local laws and customs before moving to Nairobi, as well as the cost of living and the availability of housing. Expats should also be aware of the security situation in the city, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Additionally, expats should familiarize themselves with the local language, Swahili, as it is widely spoken in Nairobi. Finally, expats should take the time to explore the city and its many attractions, from its bustling markets to its stunning national parks," said one expat in Nairobi.

How do I find a place to live in Nairobi?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One option for finding a place to live in Nairobi is to search online for rental listings. There are many websites that offer listings of apartments, houses, and other types of rental properties in the city. Most expat homes and apartments are located in the city center, close to shopping malls, restaurants, and other attractions," said one expat in Nairobi.

If you are thinking about moving to Nairobi, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Nairobi varies greatly depending on the area and type of housing. Should I buy or rent a home in Nairobi?

However, it is important to consider the cost of living in the city, as well as the availability of housing. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Nairobi will depend on your individual needs and budget," said one expat in Nairobi.

What should I pack when moving to Nairobi?

We asked people living in Nairobi to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Nairobi, it is important to pack items that will help you adjust to the climate and culture. Bring clothing that is lightweight and breathable, such as cotton and linen, as well as a few warmer items for the cooler evenings. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are also essential for protection from the sun. Additionally, it is important to bring any necessary medications, as well as a first aid kit. To help you adjust to the culture, bring items that remind you of home, such as photos, books, and music. Finally, make sure to bring a valid passport and any other necessary documents," remarked one expat in Nairobi, Kenya.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Nairobi?

We asked people in Nairobi if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"In Nairobi, it is important to be respectful of local customs and traditions. It is important to dress modestly and to avoid public displays of affection. It is also important to be aware of the local language and to be respectful when speaking to locals. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local religious beliefs and to be respectful of them. It is also important to be aware of the local customs regarding food and to be respectful of them. Finally, it is important to be aware of the local customs regarding greetings and to be respectful of them," replied a member in Nairobi.

"Yes. A very friendly person taught me the local custom of calling a person by his surname instead of by his first name as a form of acknowledging friendship and honoring his bloodline. When she then called a person by his first name I asked why without thinking. I did not realise that I was putting her in a very bad spot as it blatantly highlighted a sensitive political situation," commented one expat who made the move to Nairobi.

How are healthcare services Nairobi?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Nairobi, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Nairobi, are a mix of public and private facilities, offering various levels of care to the city's residents. The public healthcare system is comprised of several government-run hospitals and clinics, which provide essential medical services at low or no cost to patients. However, these facilities often face challenges such as overcrowding, inadequate funding, and a shortage of medical professionals. In contrast, private healthcare facilities in Nairobi offer a higher standard of care, with well-equipped hospitals and clinics staffed by qualified medical professionals. These facilities cater to patients who can afford to pay for their services, and often provide specialized care in areas such as cardiology, oncology, and orthopedics. Some of the private hospitals also have partnerships with international healthcare providers, ensuring access to advanced medical treatments and technologies. In addition to hospitals and clinics, Nairobi's healthcare landscape includes numerous pharmacies, diagnostic centers, and laboratories, which provide essential support services to the city's medical facilities. There are also various non-governmental organizations and community-based organizations that work to improve healthcare access and delivery, particularly in underserved areas and for vulnerable populations. Overall, healthcare services in Nairobi are diverse and cater to different segments of the population. While the public healthcare system faces challenges in terms of resources and capacity, the private sector offers high-quality care for those who can afford it. Efforts are ongoing to improve the overall quality and accessibility of healthcare services in the city," wrote one expat living in Nairobi.

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Nairobi, they replied:

"Medical services in Nairobi, are a mix of public and private healthcare facilities, offering varying levels of care and expertise. The city is home to some of the country's best hospitals and medical centers, providing a range of services from primary care to specialized treatments. However, the public healthcare system often faces challenges such as inadequate funding, overcrowding, and limited resources, which can lead to long waiting times and reduced quality of care. On the other hand, private hospitals and clinics in Nairobi offer higher quality services, modern equipment, and well-trained medical professionals, but at a higher cost. Medical tourists and expatriates often prefer these private facilities for their healthcare needs. Overall, while Nairobi has made significant progress in improving its medical services, there remains a disparity between public and private healthcare options," wrote one expat living in Nairobi.
