Expats can also meet people by attending local festivals, joining meetup groups, or attending networking events. What do I need to know before moving to Geneva?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Geneva, they said:

"Before retiring in Geneva, expats should be aware of the cost of living, which is higher than in many other countries. They should also be aware of the language barrier, as French is the main language spoken in Geneva. Additionally, expats should research the healthcare system in Geneva, as it is different from many other countries. It is also important to research the tax system in Geneva, as taxes can be high. Finally, expats should research the visa requirements for living in Geneva, as they may need to obtain a residence permit," explained one expat living in Geneva, Switzerland.

"Life is very insular in Geneva, a social life does not immediately await you, you absolutely have to make the effort to join things to fit in and meet people as socialising with work colleagues is not overly common as in England," said one person in Geneva.

What do people find most challenging about the culture in Geneva?

"Expats in Geneva often find the local culture to be quite different from what they are used to. The language barrier can be a challenge, as French is the main language spoken in the city. Additionally, the cost of living in Geneva is quite high, making it difficult for expats to adjust to the local lifestyle. Furthermore, the city is quite small and can feel quite isolated, making it difficult for expats to make friends and build a social network. Finally, the Swiss culture is quite formal and reserved, which can be difficult for expats to adjust to," said one expat who made the move to Geneva.

"The lack of local language skills is at the top of the list. It isolates you and forms a barrier in what in your own country would be friendly, every day, people to people contact situations: such as pleasantries exchanged with a check out clerk or a neighbor while walking the dog. I also feel out of it with regards to the news: what is going on in the arts, politics. I used to be well informed, now I am not at all. I have been too busy getting my kids settled, hooking up utilities, figuring out our mail forwarding, our taxes, etc," explained one foreigner living in Geneva, Switzerland.

What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Geneva for a while?

"If you plan to stay in Geneva for a while, you will need to apply for a residence permit. Depending on your nationality, you may also need to apply for a visa. You should contact the Swiss embassy or consulate in your home country to find out what documents you need to provide in order to apply for a residence permit or visa," explained one expat living in Geneva, Switzerland.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Geneva?

We asked people in Geneva if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:

"It is important to be aware of the cultural norms in Geneva. It is considered impolite to be late for appointments or social engagements. It is also important to dress appropriately for the occasion, as dressing too casually or too formally can be seen as disrespectful. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local language and customs, as speaking too loudly or using inappropriate language can be seen as offensive. Finally, it is important to be respectful of religious beliefs and practices, as Geneva is a multi-cultural city," said one person in Geneva.

"The only thing I can think of is when my daughter & I went shopping - we traipsed through stores trying things on including shoes, coats, make-up, etc. I think perhaps they are accustomed to more formally assisting you where as we are used to helping ourselves. I felt like a bull in a china shop! The reverse is true at the grocery stores-while we are used to having our groceries bagged - here, they shove it down to the end & you are supposed to bag it yourself - in your own bags. If you aren't quick enough, the next person's things get mixed in and they give you a look," said one expat who made the move to Geneva.
