What do I need to know before moving to Dar es Salaam?
When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Dar es Salaam, they said:
"Expats considering retiring in Dar es Salaam should be aware of several factors before making the move. Firstly, it is essential to research and understand the visa and residency requirements, as well as the process for obtaining a retirement visa or residency permit. Healthcare facilities in Dar es Salaam are limited, and expats may need to travel to South Africa or other countries for specialized treatments. It is crucial to have comprehensive health insurance that covers medical evacuation. The cost of living in Dar es Salaam can be relatively high, particularly for housing and imported goods. Expats should budget accordingly and be prepared to adapt to local products and services. Safety and security can be a concern in Dar es Salaam, with petty crime and occasional incidents of violent crime. Expats should take precautions, such as avoiding walking alone at night and being vigilant with personal belongings. The climate in Dar es Salaam is tropical, with hot and humid weather throughout the year. Expats should be prepared for this and take measures to stay cool and hydrated. Language can be a barrier, as Swahili is the primary language spoken in Tanzania. While English is widely spoken in business and tourist areas, learning some basic Swahili can be helpful for day-to-day interactions. Cultural differences may also be a challenge for some expats. It is essential to respect local customs and traditions, dress modestly, and be aware of local etiquette. Infrastructure and public services in Dar es Salaam can be unreliable, with frequent power outages and limited access to clean water in some areas. Expats should be prepared for these challenges and consider investing in backup power sources and water filtration systems. Finally, it is essential to stay informed about local news and developments, as well as maintaining a network of contacts and friends within the expat community. This can help with adjusting to life in Dar es Salaam and provide support during challenging times," said one person in Dar es Salaam.

What do people appreciate most about the culture in Dar es Salaam?
"Expats in Dar es Salaam appreciate the warm and friendly nature of the local people, who are known for their hospitality and willingness to help newcomers. They also enjoy the vibrant and diverse cultural scene, which includes a mix of traditional and modern music, dance, and art. The rich history of the city, with its blend of African, Arab, and Indian influences, is another aspect that expats find fascinating. Moreover, expats appreciate the laid-back and relaxed pace of life in Dar es Salaam, which allows them to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. The delicious local cuisine, featuring fresh seafood, flavorful spices, and a variety of fruits and vegetables, is another highlight for many expats living in the city. Additionally, expats value the sense of community and strong family ties that are prevalent in Tanzanian culture. This emphasis on togetherness and social connections can make it easier for expats to form lasting friendships and feel at home in their new surroundings. Finally, the natural beauty of Tanzania, with its stunning beaches, national parks, and wildlife reserves, is something that expats in Dar es Salaam can easily access and enjoy, making it a truly unique and memorable experience," said one expat in Dar es Salaam.
What do people find most challenging about the culture in Dar es Salaam?
"Learning to be more patient; having things not happen as quickly as I am used to," said one person in Dar es Salaam.
"Expats in Dar es Salaam may find the local culture challenging in several ways. They may struggle with the language barrier, as Swahili is the primary language spoken in Tanzania, and not everyone speaks English fluently. This can make communication and daily tasks difficult. Another challenge could be adjusting to the slower pace of life, known as "pole pole" in Swahili. Tanzanians value taking their time and being patient, which can be frustrating for expats who are used to a faster pace. Additionally, expats may find it difficult to navigate the complex social hierarchies and norms in Tanzania. Respect for elders and authority figures is deeply ingrained in the culture, and it is important to understand and adhere to these expectations. The concept of personal space may also be different in Tanzania, with people often standing closer to each other than expats may be accustomed to. This can be uncomfortable for some individuals. Furthermore, expats may find it challenging to adapt to the local cuisine, which is heavily based on starches like rice, maize, and cassava, and may not always cater to diverse dietary preferences or restrictions. Lastly, the lack of infrastructure and reliable public services, such as transportation, healthcare, and electricity, can be frustrating for expats who are used to more developed systems in their home countries," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Dar es Salaam.
What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Dar es Salaam for a while?
"For a stay longer than 90 days in Tanzania, you will need to obtain a Residence Permit from the Immigration Authorities. You must have the correct visa before entering the country, so you should apply for the residence permit prior to arriving in Dar es Salaam. The application process requires the completion of an application form, two passport photos, and relevant documents such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate, and proof of employment; processing times may vary depending on the country. The Residence Permit is valid for up to one year and must be renewed prior to its expiration," explained one expat living in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Dar es Salaam?
We asked people in Dar es Salaam if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:
"When visiting Dar es Salaam, it is important to dress modestly, especially for women, by covering shoulders, cleavage, and knees. Avoid public displays of affection, as they are considered disrespectful. Greet people with a handshake and use your right hand for eating, shaking hands, and giving or receiving items, as the left hand is considered unclean. Be respectful of religious customs, particularly during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, by not eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours. Do not take photographs of people without their permission, and avoid photographing government buildings, military installations, and other sensitive locations. Be patient and polite when dealing with locals, as Tanzanians value politeness and may consider directness or impatience as rude. Finally, avoid discussing politics or making negative comments about the government, as this can be seen as disrespectful," said one person in Dar es Salaam.
"I had diarrhea on a bus ride to a rural village. My husband had to get the bus to stop in the middle of the bush and went on top of the bus to grab my toilet paper, passed it to me in full view of everyone then I went into the bush to go to the bathroom while everyone had to wait. (Tanzanians view the use of toilet paper to be unclean). I confused the word AIDS with AUNTY in kiswahili, in front of all my Tanzanian in-laws..," said one expat who made the move to Dar es Salaam.

What are healthcare services like in Dar es Salaam?
When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Dar es Salaam, they replied:
"Healthcare services in Dar es Salaam, are a mix of public and private facilities, with the public sector being the primary provider of healthcare. The city is home to several major hospitals, including Muhimbili National Hospital, which is the largest referral and teaching hospital in the country. There are also numerous smaller hospitals, health centers, and dispensaries scattered throughout the city, providing various levels of care. The quality of healthcare services in Dar es Salaam varies significantly, with public facilities often being overcrowded and under-resourced, leading to long waiting times and limited access to specialized care. In contrast, private hospitals and clinics generally offer better quality services, with more modern equipment and well-trained staff, but at a higher cost. Primary healthcare services, such as vaccinations, maternal and child health, and basic medical care, are provided at the community level through health centers and dispensaries. However, these facilities often face challenges such as inadequate staffing, lack of essential medicines, and poor infrastructure. In recent years, there have been efforts to improve healthcare services in Dar es Salaam, with the government investing in infrastructure development, staff training, and public-private partnerships. Additionally, non-governmental organizations and international donors have played a significant role in supporting healthcare initiatives in the city, particularly in areas such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and maternal and child health. Despite these efforts, many residents of Dar es Salaam still face challenges in accessing quality healthcare services, particularly those living in informal settlements and rural areas. Issues such as affordability, transportation, and lack of awareness about available services continue to be barriers to accessing healthcare for many people in the city," said one digital nomad in Dar es Salaam.
