Where should I live in Saadiyat Island?

We asked digital nomads and expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Saadiyat Island, involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget and the type of accommodation you're looking for. This could range from a studio apartment to a luxury villa, depending on your needs and financial capacity. Next, you should research the different neighborhoods on Saadiyat Island. Some areas might be more residential, while others might be closer to amenities like shops, restaurants, and schools. Consider your lifestyle and daily needs when choosing a location. Once you have a clear idea of what you're looking for, you can start your search. There are several online real estate platforms that list properties for rent or sale in Saadiyat Island, such as Bayut, Property Finder, and Dubizzle. These websites allow you to filter your search based on location, property type, price range, and other criteria. You can also consider hiring a real estate agent to assist you in your search. They can provide you with expert advice, arrange viewings, and handle negotiations with landlords or sellers. Make sure to choose a reputable agent who is registered with the Real Estate Regulatory Agency in the UAE. When you find a property that you're interested in, arrange a viewing. This will give you a chance to inspect the property, ask questions, and get a feel for the neighborhood. If you're renting, you should also inquire about the terms of the lease, including the duration, renewal options, and any additional fees. Finally, once you've found a place that meets your needs and fits your budget, you can proceed with the rental or purchase process. This typically involves signing a contract, paying a deposit, and possibly providing some additional documentation. If you're buying a property, you may also need to secure a mortgage. Remember, finding a place to live in Saadiyat Island, like anywhere else, can take time and patience. Don't rush the process, and make sure to do your due diligence to ensure you're making a decision that's right for you," explained one expat living in Saadiyat Island, the UAE.

What do people find most challenging about the culture in Saadiyat Island?

"Expats in Saadiyat Island often find the language barrier to be a significant challenge, as Arabic is the official language and not everyone is fluent in English. The strict adherence to Islamic customs and traditions can also be difficult for some expats to adjust to, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan when public eating and drinking during daylight hours is prohibited. The extreme heat during the summer months can also be a challenge for those not accustomed to such high temperatures. Additionally, the cultural emphasis on modesty and conservative dress can be a significant adjustment for expats from more liberal cultures. Lastly, the hierarchical nature of Emirati society, where age and position are highly respected, can be a challenge for those from more egalitarian societies," remarked one member in Saadiyat Island.

What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Saadiyat Island for a while?

"If you are planning to stay in Saadiyat Island for an extended period, you will need to secure a few important documents. Firstly, you will need a valid passport with at least six months' validity remaining. If you are not a citizen of one of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, you will also need a visa. The type of visa you need will depend on the purpose of your stay. If you are visiting for tourism, you will need a tourist visa. If you are planning to work, you will need a work visa, which must be sponsored by a UAE employer. For long-term stays, you might consider applying for a residency visa. This can be sponsored by a UAE employer, a family member who is a resident in the UAE, or you can also apply if you own property in the UAE. In addition to these, if you plan to drive while in the UAE, you will need an international driving permit, along with your original driving license from your home country. Please note that visa regulations can change, and it is always best to check with the UAE embassy or consulate in your home country for the most up-to-date information," said one person in Saadiyat Island.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Saadiyat Island?

We asked people in Saadiyat Island if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:

"In Saadiyat Island, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, so it's best to avoid hugging, kissing, or holding hands in public. Dressing modestly is also important, particularly for women. It's recommended to cover your shoulders and knees, and avoid wearing tight or revealing clothing. Alcohol consumption is allowed in designated areas, but public intoxication and drinking and driving are strictly prohibited. It's also considered rude to refuse an invitation to someone's home. If you're invited, it's customary to bring a small gift, but avoid giving anything made of pig skin or anything that contains alcohol, as these are considered haram (forbidden) in Islam. Taking photographs of people without their permission, particularly women, is considered disrespectful and can even be illegal. During the holy month of Ramadan, eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours is considered disrespectful. Finally, avoid making negative comments about the royal family or the government, as this can be considered a crime," remarked one member in Saadiyat Island.
