Where should I live in Kalba?

We asked digital nomads and expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Kalba, United Arab Emirates, involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget and the type of accommodation you're looking for. This could range from a small apartment to a large villa, depending on your needs and financial capacity. Next, you should research the different neighborhoods in Kalba to find one that suits your lifestyle and preferences. Consider factors such as proximity to work or school, availability of amenities such as shops and restaurants, and the overall safety and cleanliness of the area. Once you have a clear idea of what you're looking for, you can start your search. There are several online real estate platforms that list properties for rent or sale in Kalba, such as Property Finder, Bayut, and Dubizzle. These websites allow you to filter your search based on location, property type, size, and price range. You can also consider hiring a real estate agent to assist you in your search. They can provide valuable insights about the local market, help you negotiate prices, and guide you through the legal procedures involved in renting or buying a property in the UAE. Once you've found a property you're interested in, arrange a viewing with the landlord or real estate agent. This will give you a chance to inspect the property, ask any questions, and get a feel for the neighborhood. If you decide to proceed with the property, you'll need to negotiate the terms of the lease or purchase agreement, including the price, duration of the lease, and any other conditions. In the UAE, it's common to pay rent in advance for the entire year, although some landlords may allow you to pay in multiple installments. Finally, once you've agreed on the terms, you'll need to sign the contract and make the necessary payments. This typically includes the first year's rent, a security deposit, and any agency fees if you used a real estate agent. After this, you can move into your new home in Kalba," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Kalba.

The local culture also places a high value on respect and courtesy, which is evident in the polite and considerate behavior of the local people. What do people find most challenging about the culture in Kalba?

"Expats in Kalba often find the language barrier to be a significant challenge, as Arabic is the official language and not everyone may speak English. The strict adherence to Islamic customs and traditions can also be difficult for expats to navigate, especially for those unfamiliar with the religion. This includes dress codes, dietary restrictions, and prayer times which can disrupt the normal flow of a workday. The extreme heat and harsh climate can also be a challenge for those not accustomed to such conditions. Additionally, the slower pace of life and the concept of 'Arab time', where punctuality is not always prioritized, can be frustrating for expats used to more time-conscious cultures. Lastly, the restrictions on alcohol and nightlife, as well as the segregation of genders in some social situations, can be a significant adjustment for expats from more liberal cultures," explained one expat living in Kalba, the UAE.

What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Kalba for a while?

"If you are planning to stay in Kalba for an extended period, you will need to secure a visa. The type of visa you need depends on the purpose of your stay. If you are visiting for tourism, you will need a tourist visa. If you are planning to work, you will need a work visa, which requires a sponsorship from a UAE employer. For a work visa, you will also need a health card and labor card, which are usually arranged by your employer. If you are planning to stay for more than six months, you may need to apply for a residence visa. In addition to the visa, you will need a valid passport that is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date. You may also need to provide proof of onward travel or return ticket. Please note that visa requirements can change, so it's always a good idea to check with the UAE embassy or consulate in your home country before you travel," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Kalba.

"In Kalba, it is considered disrespectful to show the soles of your feet or shoes, as they are considered dirty. Avoid using your left hand for eating or greeting, as it is traditionally used for personal hygiene and is considered unclean. Public displays of affection are frowned upon, especially between unmarried or unrelated individuals of the opposite sex. Dress modestly, covering your shoulders and knees, to respect the local culture and Islamic traditions. Do not take photographs of people, particularly women, without their permission. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, religion, or sex. During the holy month of Ramadan, do not eat, drink, or smoke in public during daylight hours. Always ask for permission before entering a mosque. Do not consume alcohol in public places, as it is illegal and can lead to severe penalties," said one person in Kalba.
