One option is to rent a room or flat in the city centre, or in one of the city's many neighbourhoods, such as Bab el Oued or Hydra. Many apartments for rent can be found on websites like Algérie-annonce or Immobilier-DZ. Another option is to rent from an agency, which can help find you a place that suits your preferences. "Expats considering retiring in Algiers should familiarize themselves with the city and its cultural norms. Healthcare services in Algeria are basic and it is recommended that expats research private healthcare options. Expats should also check what visa they require and familiarize themselves with Algier's laws, regulations and tax requirements. As Algeria is an Islamic country, expats should dress conservatively and abide by the local customs. English is not widely spoken and expats should learn the local language, Arabic, to ensure smoother integration. Private housing can be difficult and expensive to find but renting an apartment is a possible option. Finally, expats in Algiers should ensure they have an up-to-date passport and travel documents," said one person in Algiers, Algeria.

What do people find most challenging about the culture in Algiers?
"Lack of safety ie electrics, windons on 6th floor that fully open, wires coming out of plug sockets and connecting to street electric viva wires from your window. The metality of the middle aged me here... will ingore women, cut you up on the road then beep at you like its your fault! The lack of children groups and support for parents. How close family life is," said one person in Algiers.
"One of the most challenging aspects of the local culture for expats in Algiers is navigating different expectations regarding gender roles, as there is a wide range of traditional and modern beliefs concerning gender. Additionally, expats may find it difficult to cope with the strict cultural protocols around building relationships, as Algerian culture places a strong emphasis on maintaining social harmony and relationships of trust. Additionally, navigating the informal economy and bureaucracy can be difficult for expats in Algeria, as both rely heavily on cultural customs and norms that may be unfamiliar to those coming from abroad. Finally, expats in Algiers may find it hard to adjust to the local diet, which can be quite different to that of other countries, as well as the general lack of understanding of foreign customs," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Algiers, Algeria.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Algiers?
We asked people in Algiers if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:
"In Algiers, it is important to dress conservatively and respect local customs. Public displays of affection between men and women, such as kissing or holding hands, should be avoided. Alcohol is widely available in many restaurants and stores, but open consumption of alcohol is not allowed in public places. It is important to ask permission before taking pictures of people and to be aware of religious practices. It is also best to avoid engaging in political debates with locals," explained one expat living in Algiers, Algeria, Algeria.
"In my husband's village in the Berber mountains they have two fountains, one for female and the other for the men who shares with the donkeys. Needless to day there were many moments when I forgot that I was neither a man or a donkey and accidentally went to the wrong fountain," said one person in Algiers.

What are healthcare services like in Algiers?
When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Algiers, they replied:
"Healthcare services in Algiers, consist of a mix of public and private healthcare facilities, including hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies. The public healthcare system is funded by the government and provides free or low-cost medical services to citizens. However, public hospitals and clinics often face challenges such as overcrowding, long waiting times, and limited resources. On the other hand, private healthcare facilities in Algiers offer a higher standard of care, with more modern equipment and better-trained medical staff. These facilities, however, can be quite expensive and may not be accessible to all residents. Primary healthcare services in Algiers are provided through a network of health centers and polyclinics, which offer general medical care, vaccinations, and maternal and child health services. For more specialized care, patients may be referred to secondary or tertiary hospitals. Pharmacies are widely available throughout the city, providing prescription and over-the-counter medications. However, the availability of certain medications may be limited, and it is recommended for visitors to bring a sufficient supply of any necessary medications with them. Emergency medical services in Algiers are available, but response times can be slow, and the quality of care may not be up to international standards. It is recommended for expatriates and visitors to have comprehensive medical insurance and consider medical evacuation coverage in case of serious illness or injury. Overall, while healthcare services in Algiers are available and accessible, the quality of care can vary significantly between public and private facilities, and it is essential for individuals to take necessary precautions and plan for their healthcare needs accordingly," commented a person living in Algiers, Algeria.

What are the pros and cons of living in Algiers?
"Expats and digital nomads living in Algiers, often appreciate the city's rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture. They enjoy exploring the ancient Casbah, visiting museums, and experiencing the local music scene. The Mediterranean climate, with its warm summers and mild winters, is also a draw for many. The relatively low cost of living in Algiers is another advantage, as it allows expats and digital nomads to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle without breaking the bank. The local cuisine, featuring delicious traditional dishes like couscous and tagine, is also a highlight for many. However, there are also several challenges that expats and digital nomads face while living in Algiers. One of the main concerns is the lack of reliable and fast internet connectivity, which can be a significant obstacle for those who rely on the internet for work or communication. The language barrier can also be an issue, as not everyone speaks English, and learning Arabic or French may be necessary to navigate daily life. Additionally, the bureaucracy and red tape involved in obtaining visas, work permits, and other necessary documentation can be frustrating and time-consuming. Safety and security are also concerns for some expats and digital nomads, as Algeria has experienced political instability and terrorism in the past. While Algiers is generally considered safer than other parts of the country, it is still essential to be cautious and aware of one's surroundings. Lastly, the lack of a well-established expat community can make it challenging to build a social network and find like-minded individuals. This can lead to feelings of isolation and difficulty adjusting to life in Algiers," said one digital nomad in Algiers.
