What do I need to know before moving to Sydney?
When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Sydney, they said:
"1. Expats looking to retire in Sydney should be aware that their pension or retirement income available in their home country may not be enough to live comfortably in Sydney. It is important to plan ahead and prepare accordingly. 2. Expats must research the areas and neighbourhoods in Sydney thoroughly; as Sydney is one of the most expensive cities in Australia, expats must pick a location that suits their budget and lifestyle. 3. There are many visas available for expats to retire in Australia from their home country; it is advisable to seek counsel from immigration professionals in order to understand the visa requirements and eligibility criteria. 4. Health care is something that expats need to consider carefully when moving to Australia; Sydney has some of the best hospitals and health care options available in Australia, however expats may need to purchase additional health insurance to cover any possible costs. 5. Finding suitable rental accommodation can be difficult in Sydney as vacancy rates and rental costs are high. It is important to start the search well in advance to ensure that the expat can settle in comfortable and affordable accommodation. 6. Expats should investigate the taxation system in Australia carefully, as the taxes and regulations can be quite different than the expat’s home country. Advisors should be briefed on the current system and the taxes that need to be paid. 7. Finally, expats should make sure to plan a budget before moving and understand the cost of living in Sydney. This will help them to easily adjust to their new situation and enjoy the new life in Sydney," remarked one member in Sydney, Australia.

What do people appreciate most about the culture in Sydney?
"One of the most beloved aspects of Sydney’s culture is its laid-back atmosphere. Expats love that the city is a great mix of the urban and the outdoors — they can enjoy plenty of city life while getting out of the bustling crowds to the beach or nearby parks. Expats also appreciate the welcoming nature of the locals and the city's strong art and culture scene, which features world-class restaurants, theaters, galleries, nightlife, and a variety of other entertainment options. Above all, expats enjoy Sydney’s wide array of outdoor activities, including surfing, boating, fishing, beach walks and other activities. Sydney’s stunningly beautiful beaches, parks, and harbor make the city one of the most attractive places to live in the world," said one expat who made the move to Sydney, Australia.
"Beautiful landscapes, the immensity of the land, the see... summarising: the nature," explained one foreigner living in Sydney, Australia.
What do people find most challenging about the culture in Sydney?
"Mentality, obtuse thinking, superficiality, consumerism, lack of values, ignorance (everywhere, not just in Australia), racism, judging people by their accent, not being inclusive as they pretend to be, not being laid back as they tend to demonstrate to tourists... mate," explained one person living in Sydney, Australia.
"Expats in Sydney often find the local culture very different from what they are used to. One of the biggest challenges for expats can be the challenge of blending in and understanding unwritten cultural norms. Many also find it difficult to get used to the pace of life in Sydney, which can be quite fast and frenetic. Becoming accustomed to the Australian way of speaking, which features a lot of slang phrases, can also be a challenge for new arrivals. Additionally, the weather can be a bit of a culture shock for expats, as seasonal temperatures vary greatly from those in many other countries," said one expat in Sydney, Australia.
What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Sydney for a while?
"If you are planning to stay and work in Sydney for a while, you will need to obtain a visa. Depending on your country of origin, you may need to apply for a permanent residency visa, temporary work visa, or student visa. Other documents that you may need to provide during the application process could include passport and/or birth certificate, photos, proof of financial capabilities, health insurance, and academic transcripts," explained one expat living in Sydney, Australia, Australia.

"It is considered impolite to not take off your shoes when entering someone's home in Australia. Additionally, it is important to be aware of local sensitivities surrounding Indigenous Australians; it is best to show respect and not use terms or phrases considered to be racist or culturally inappropriate. It is also considered rude to start eating before everybody at the table has been served. Lastly, public drunkenness is not tolerated and can be met with hefty fines," said one person in Sydney, Australia.
"Well I did once after being asked for feedback told an Australian what I really thought. .....They just can't handle the truth - so I have generally stayed away from that," said one expat who made the move to Sydney.

What are the pros and cons of living in Sydney?
"After 14 years I have a love/hate relationship with Sydney. With over 5 million people the city is bursting at the seams and is suffering from growing pains. I am thoroughly displeased with both the state federal politicians and hope that some real change will be coming soon. My husband and I have bought land in Tasmania and will be moving there as soon as the kids are done with school. But I adore the Australian ethos. Home life matters just as much as work life. Holidays are almost considered a birthright here. I can send my teens all over the city on public transport by themselves with reasonable belief in their safety. I wish Diet Coke was cheaper and I would kill for decent Tex Mex or pizza, and yes, sometimes the spiders scare the crap out of me....but I will never willingly live outside of Australia again," said one foreigner in Sydney.
"Expats and digital nomads generally like the beautiful beaches, stunning natural landscapes, and pleasant climate in Sydney. They appreciate the city's multiculturalism, which is reflected in its diverse food scene and various cultural events. The high quality of life, excellent healthcare system, and good education options are also attractive to expats. Additionally, Sydney offers a wide range of outdoor activities, such as surfing, hiking, and cycling, which cater to an active lifestyle. On the other hand, expats and digital nomads often dislike the high cost of living in Sydney, particularly when it comes to housing and transportation. The city's traffic congestion can be frustrating, and public transportation may not always be reliable. Some expats may find it challenging to make friends with locals, as Australians can be perceived as somewhat reserved. Finally, the distance from other countries can make it difficult for expats to visit their home countries or travel internationally," remarked one member in Sydney.
