The hot and humid climate can also be challenging for those not used to tropical weather. Furthermore, expats may need time to adapt to local customs and traditions, as well as the close-knit nature of the community, which can sometimes lead to a feeling of being an outsider," said one person in Benque Viejo del Carmen.

What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Benque Viejo del Carmen for a while?

"To stay in Benque Viejo del Carmen for an extended period, you will need a valid passport with at least six months of validity remaining. Upon arrival, you will be granted a 30-day tourist visa. If you plan to stay longer, you must apply for a visa extension at the local immigration office every 30 days, up to a maximum of six months. After six months, you may apply for a temporary residency permit, which requires proof of financial means, a clean criminal record, and a local address.
