What do people find most challenging about the culture in Sandys?

"Expats in Sandys often find the high cost of living to be a significant challenge, as the island is one of the most expensive places to live in the world. The slow pace of life, known as "island time", can also be difficult for those accustomed to a faster, more punctual lifestyle. Additionally, the limited availability of goods and services can be frustrating, as many items must be imported and can be subject to delays or high costs. The humid subtropical climate, while appealing to some, can also be a challenge for those not used to such weather. Lastly, while English is the official language, the local Bermudian accent and slang can sometimes be difficult for expats to understand," said one expat who made the move to Sandys.

What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Sandys for a while?

"If you are planning to stay in Sandys for an extended period, you will need to apply for a visa or residency permit. The type of visa or permit you need depends on your purpose of stay. If you are visiting as a tourist, you may not need a visa if your stay is less than 90 days. However, you will need a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date. If you are planning to work in Bermuda, you will need a work permit. This must be applied for by your employer in Bermuda. If you are planning to study in Bermuda, you will need a student visa. This must be applied for by the educational institution you will be attending. If you are planning to retire in Bermuda, you will need a residential certificate. This is available to individuals who are at least 50 years old, have substantial means to support themselves, and do not intend to work in Bermuda. In all cases, you should check with the Bermuda Department of Immigration for the most current requirements," said one expat who made the move to Sandys.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Sandys?

We asked people in Sandys if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:

"In Sandys, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions. Dress modestly when not at the beach, as Bermudians tend to dress more formally than in other beach destinations. Avoid wearing beachwear in town or in restaurants. It's considered rude to take photographs of locals without their permission. Always ask before you snap a picture. Bermudians are generally polite and reserved, so avoid loud or boisterous behavior, especially in public places. Tipping is customary in Bermuda, so be sure to tip appropriately in restaurants, taxis, and other service industries. It's also considered impolite to litter, so always dispose of your trash properly. While Bermudians are known for their friendliness, it's important to respect their privacy, especially in smaller communities. Avoid asking too many personal questions unless you have established a good rapport. Lastly, Bermudians drive on the left side of the road, so be careful if you're used to driving on the right. It's not a cultural faux pas, but it's an important local custom to be aware of," explained one expat living in Sandys, Bermuda.
