How do I meet people in Armenia?

When we asked people living in Armenia about club and activities where newcomers can meet others, they responded:

"Expats in Armenia often join various clubs and activities to socialize and meet new people. These include language exchange clubs, where they can practice and improve their Spanish while helping locals with English. They may also join cooking classes to learn about traditional Colombian cuisine, or participate in dance classes to learn popular Latin dances like salsa and bachata. Outdoor activities are also popular among expats in Armenia. They often join hiking and cycling clubs to explore the beautiful landscapes of the Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Some expats also participate in volunteer work, which not only allows them to give back to the community but also provides opportunities to meet locals and other expats. In addition to joining clubs and activities, expats often meet people through social events and gatherings. These can range from local festivals and cultural events to informal get-togethers at local bars and restaurants. Many expats also use online platforms and social media groups to connect with other expats in the area. Another popular way for expats to meet people in Armenia is through coworking spaces. These shared workspaces are not only a place to work but also a community of like-minded individuals. They often host networking events and social activities, providing a great opportunity for expats to meet locals and other foreigners. Finally, expats often meet people through their accommodation. Whether they're staying in a shared apartment, a guesthouse, or a homestay, living with others provides plenty of opportunities to socialize and make new friends," said one person in Armenia.

What is life like in Armenia?

When we asked people living in Armenia what life is like and how people spend their time, they said:

"Life for expats and digital nomads in Armenia is often described as vibrant and culturally rich. The city offers a relaxed lifestyle with a low cost of living, making it an attractive destination for those looking to work remotely. The local community is known for being friendly and welcoming to foreigners, making it easy for expats to integrate and make new friends. Armenia is also known for its pleasant climate, beautiful landscapes, and a wide range of outdoor activities, providing plenty of opportunities for leisure and exploration. The city has a good internet connectivity, which is crucial for digital nomads. The food scene in Armenia is diverse and delicious, with a variety of local and international cuisines available. The city also has a vibrant nightlife with numerous bars, clubs, and live music venues. Despite its many advantages, there are also challenges to living in Armenia. The language barrier can be significant as English is not widely spoken, making it necessary for expats to learn some Spanish. Additionally, while the city is generally safe, like any other city, it has areas that are best avoided, especially at night. Overall, Armenia offers a unique blend of modern conveniences and traditional Colombian culture, making it an appealing choice for expats and digital nomads," said one person in Armenia.

Where should I live in Armenia?

We asked digital nomads and expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"To find a place to live in Armenia, you can start by researching online on websites such as Airbnb, Booking.com, and OLX Colombia, which offer various accommodation options like apartments, houses, and shared rooms. You can also join local Facebook groups or expat forums where people often post about available rentals or roommates needed. Another option is to visit Armenia and explore the neighborhoods in person. This will give you a better understanding of the area and help you find a place that suits your needs. You can walk around the city, look for "Se Arrienda" (For Rent) signs, and talk to locals who might know of available properties. Additionally, you can contact local real estate agencies or property management companies that can help you find a suitable place to live. They can provide you with a list of available properties based on your preferences and budget. Lastly, consider asking friends, family, or colleagues who live in Armenia or have connections there for recommendations. They might know of available rentals or can put you in touch with someone who does," said one person in Armenia.

What do I need to know before moving to Armenia?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Armenia, they said:

"Expats considering retirement in Armenia should be aware of several key factors. Firstly, the cost of living is relatively low compared to many Western countries, making it an attractive option for those on a fixed income. However, it's important to note that healthcare may not be up to the standards that expats from developed countries are accustomed to. While Colombia has a national healthcare system, the quality of care can vary, and private health insurance is recommended. The language spoken in Armenia is Spanish, so it would be beneficial to learn the language or at least basic phrases to help with day-to-day living. Armenia is known for its warm and welcoming locals, but like any place, it has areas that are safer than others, so it's important to research and choose your living situation carefully. The city is part of the coffee region, so it's a great place for coffee lovers and those who enjoy a slower pace of life. Public transportation is widely available in Armenia, but it may not be as reliable or comfortable as what expats are used to. Owning a car can be expensive due to high import taxes. Finally, while Colombia has made great strides in improving safety and stability, it's important for expats to stay informed about the political situation. It's also worth noting that while the climate in Armenia is generally mild, it can be quite rainy, so appropriate clothing and housing considerations are necessary," explained one person living in Armenia, Colombia.

What do people find most challenging about the culture in Armenia?

"Expats in Armenia may find the language barrier to be one of the most challenging aspects of the local culture, as Spanish is the primary language spoken and not everyone speaks English. They might also struggle with adapting to the local customs and traditions, such as the importance of family and close-knit communities, which can make it difficult for them to integrate and form connections with locals. Another challenge could be adjusting to the Colombian concept of time, which is more relaxed and flexible than in many Western countries. This can lead to frustration when dealing with punctuality and scheduling. Additionally, expats may find it difficult to navigate the local bureaucracy and legal system, which can be complex and time-consuming. Safety and security concerns can also be challenging for expats in Armenia, as Colombia has a history of crime and violence, although the situation has improved significantly in recent years. Expats may need to take extra precautions and be aware of their surroundings to ensure their safety. Finally, adapting to the local cuisine and dietary habits can be a challenge for some expats, as Colombian food is quite different from what they may be used to in their home countries. It may take time for them to adjust to the local flavors and ingredients, as well as the typical meal times and eating habits," said one expat who made the move to Armenia.

What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Armenia for a while?

"To stay in Armenia for an extended period, you will need a valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity. Additionally, you may need to apply for a Colombian visa, such as a tourist visa, student visa, or work visa, depending on the purpose of your visit. It is essential to check the specific visa requirements for your nationality and the duration of your stay. If you plan to reside in Armenia, you may need to obtain a temporary or permanent resident visa, along with other supporting documents such as a health certificate, proof of financial means, and a criminal background check. It is recommended to consult the Colombian consulate or embassy in your country for detailed information on the required documents and application process," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Armenia.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Armenia?

We asked people in Armenia if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:

"When visiting Armenia, avoid wearing revealing clothing, as it may be considered disrespectful. Be cautious when discussing politics, as opinions can be strong and varied. Refrain from comparing Colombia to other South American countries, as Colombians are proud of their unique culture. Avoid making jokes about drug trafficking or violence, as these are sensitive topics. Do not assume everyone speaks English, and make an effort to learn some basic Spanish phrases. Be punctual for social events, but be prepared for locals to arrive late. When greeting someone, use a handshake or a light kiss on the cheek, but avoid hugging unless you know the person well. Finally, always show respect for the local customs and traditions, and be open to learning about the rich Colombian culture," said one person in Armenia.
